Aurora

Mating…

Imprint…

Significant other…

True love…

Growing up in wolf society, I heard those words a lot in our village.

Yeah, you read that right. Wolf society.

I am a werewolf. Believe it or not, we do exist. In fact, we live among humans, unknown to them.

We usually walk around in our human forms, and we develop the capability of transforming into wolves once we turn eighteen years old.

And when that happens, we find our mate.

You see, the Moon Goddess designed a significant other for each and everyone of us. And once we find them, we love no one except that single person for the rest of our lives.

Not many of us have that chance, though. In this day and age, it is rare for a wolf to find their mate.

Mostly because our numbers are fewer and fewer every day, due to the constant hunting we face from human hunters and rogue trackers.

My parents were one of the lucky few to be married to their mate.

My father met my mother at a gathering of the neighbouring villages, and fell deeply in love right away. But unfortunately, my mother died while having me—Aurora Craton.

My father remarried out of sorrow, and his second wife, who became my stepmother, took over the reigns of the Craton household.

My father was a warrior for our pack, the gamma to be more precise, but he died in duty five years ago.

Now, I was a couple of days away from turning eighteen. I was nervous about finally meeting my wolf.

And more importantly, finding my mate.

“Aurora! Are you done with the laundry? Dinner’s ready, you know,” my stepmother shouted from inside the house.

“I’m coming, Montana!” I shouted as I hung the last garment on the line. I looked up at the sky, enjoying the warmth the sun offered.

It was a rare sight, as we lived in a little village named Iliamna, in Alaska.

Our pack, the Blood Moon pack, lived among humans who had no knowledge of our existence.

As I stepped into the house, Iwas greeted by my stepmother’s hideous sneer.

“What took you so long? I’m starving!” she said.

“You could’ve started without me,.” I said as I sat at the table and began eating.

I had to give it to Montana. Her cooking was excellent.

“So, Rory…in a couple of days you’ll become of age, right?” my stepmother asked.

I looked up from my plate of food. “Huh? Oh…yeah,” I mumbled, turning my attention back to my meal.

“You know…it’s about time you started making your own money. Rodrick’s pension is getting low.”

I looked up at her again, almost choking on my food. “Excuse me?”

“Yes, and it wasn’t much to begin with, dear. And having to share it between the two of us has had a huge impact on it,” she said.

“So, I decided I’d offer your name for the leader’s house. They are in desperate need for housemaids, since it’s the alpha’s birthday celebration,” she continued.

“You did what!” I shouted. I stood up abruptly, my chair falling over behind me. “How could you?”

“Now now, Rory! It’s high time that you helped out with the expenses around here.”

She folded her arms over her chest. “The alpha’s party is one of the biggest events of the year. They need any extra hands they can get.”

She wiggled her eyebrows at me. “Think about it! Maybe you’ll meet your mate that night.”

I couldn’t believe her. I huffed in annoyance and stomped up to my room. I couldn’t bear being close to her any longer.

It wasn’t that she was a bad person. She’d practically raised me after my father died.

But she was so annoying sometimes, assuming that whatever she decided for me was the right choice.

I picked up my phone and video-called my best friend, Emma Johnson.

“Hey boo!” she greeted me with a hideous black mask on her face.

“What the hell do you have on your face?” I asked her with a raised eyebrow.

“Oh, it’s a charcoal mask. Tracy recommended it, so I decided to try it out,” she said with a shrug as she popped Cheetos into her mouth.

“So, what’s the plan for your b-day! You must be super excited that you’re turning eighteen. You’re gonna get to meet your mate!” she squealed in delight.

I rolled my eyes.

“I can’t wait until I turn eighteen,” Emma continued.

“First of all, I’m not sure if I’m ever going to meet my mate. You know that’s something that only happens once in a blue moon.”

I rolled over on my bed and hugged my teddy bear. “And I’ll be working on my birthday, so there’s not much I can.”

“What do you mean you’re working that night?” she gasped. “ Oh my Goddess. You didn’t!” She threw me a suspicious look.

“No, I didn’t. But Montana did.” I said, rolling my eyes again.

“What?! Why did she do that?” Emma asked, bewildered.

“She said that it would be the best way for me to find my mate.”

“Oh, come on! She can’t be serious!” Emma’s nostrils flared. “Sometimes I really don’t get your stepmom, dude.”

“Yeah, well…there’s not much I can do. I’ll just go to the stupid ball, work the night, earn my money, and come home.” I said, stifling a yawn.

“Well…if you say so. I’ll call you later. I’m gonna take this thing off of my face and get something to eat. Love ya, boo,” she said, hopping hopped out of her bed.

“Love you more.”

I hung up and stretched out on my bed.

Is it really so important for me to find my mate?

It’s not even that common anymore.

What if he’s a weirdo?

Question after question played in my head until sleep took over.

I woke up a couple of hours later. I got out of bed and headed downstairs to find that I was alone in the house.

“Montana must have gone out,” I wondered out loud before heading back up to my room. I didn’t feel like eating, so I didn’t bother preparing anything for dinner.

As usual, my stepmother was out, so I didn’t have to worry about her either. But her stupid words kept replaying in my mind.

What if I do meet my mate that night?

Will I leave with him right away?

Will he even like me? Will I like him?

“Ugh! This is so annoying!” I huffed, squeezing my pillow.

The next day, I woke to a hammering noise on my bedroom door.

“I’m up, I’m up!” I shouted. I rolled over and caught out of bed, then stumbled to the door and opened it to reveal my stepmother.

“What do you want?” I asked.

“Sweetie, you should be dressed by now. You have to be at the leader’s house in an hour,” she said grinning at me.

“Why?” I asked, exasperated.

“What do you mean, ‘why’? We already talked about this, Aurora,” she said.

“No, we didn’t! You made the decision for me!” I fired back. “You know what? I will go, and hopefully I will find my mate, so he can take me away from this place, and away from you!”

With that, I slammed the door shut in her face.

An hour later I was dressed and on my way to the leader’s house, mumbling about how miserable my life was.

Little did I know…

“I should probably apologize to Montana when I get back home,” I mumbled to myself.

As I approached the house, I couldn’t help but feel annoyed by its grandeur. It was extravagantly huge.

How many people lived here?

A guard stood ready at the entrance. He eyed me from head to toe before he spoke.

“What is your reason for the visit?”

“Umm, I’ve been hired as a housemaid to help with the alpha’s party celebration,” I answered, somewhat intimidated.

“Name?” he asked, pulling out a clipboard.

“Oh, um…Aurora Craton, sir,” I managed to squeak.

He checked the list, then nodded. It took me a second to understand that meant I was allowed in.

I’d only been to the leader’s house once before, back when my dad was alive.

I had been about six years old, and we were playing together in the park when he was summoned for an urgent meeting.

Since he had no one else to leave me with on such short notice, he took me with him.

I remembered that he’d sat me down in a chair just outside the meeting hall.

“Stay there, Rory. I won’t be long.” He’d patted my head and walked into a room filled with other werewolves.

As I sat there, a huge man had come walking in the direction of my chair.

He had long, jet-black hair, dark eyes like onyx, and a horrible gash across his face.

Alongside him was a kid, with a mop of the same jet black hair and bright blue eyes. He had been arguing with the older man.

“But I’m the future alpha, Dad! I should be in that meeting with you!”

It had been the pack’s alpha and his son.

“You’re still not ready for meetings like this, son,” the alpha had answered in a monotone voice with a stoic expression.

As they’d come closer to where I was sitting, I’d quickly slid off the chair and bowed my head in respect.

That’s what my dad and the other villagers always did when they saw the alpha.

They didn’t acknowledge my presence, even though they were standing right in front of me. They just continued their banter.

“They killed my mother! Those bastards killed her, and I want them to pay!” the kid had screamed at his father.

He had been trembling, and tears threatened to fall from the corner of his eyes.

His father had stood there, expressionless, before he finally spoke.

“Son, when the time comes, you will join us in the meeting hall. But for now, continue with your defense lessons,” the man had said as he grabbed the door knob.

“I will avenge your mother,” the alpha had said in a deathly tone before disappearing behind the door.

I’d lifted my head a little to see the boy staring at the door. His eyes were red with unshed tears, his hands clenched tight into fists.

He’d finally noticed me. He turned to face me with a glare, quickly wiping his tears away with his arm.

“How long have you been there? Who let you in?” he’d asked, still glaring at me.

“Um…Daddy was called for an important meeting with the alpha and the elders, sir.” I quickly answered, bowing my head once more.

“Who’s your father? What’s his name?” he’d asked, still not convinced.

“Rodrick Craton, sir.” I answered, fidgeting with my hands.

“Craton? Your father is the gamma?” he’d asked, more passively this time.

At the time, I wasn’t that familiar with the pack statuses. I knew there was the alpha, the leader. Then there was the beta, his second in command.

And the gamma, who was responsible for strategizing and organizing all events and meetings.

Then there were the elders, the healers—or wolf doctors—,the warriors, the seekers and the peacemakers.

Back then, I’d known dad had an important role in the pack, but I didn’t understand just how big a role.

“Um…yes?” I answered.

“Is that an answer or a question?” he’d said mockingly.

“Um…answer, sir. My dad is the gamma,” I said, trying to speak with more confidence.

He eyed me for a moment, then shook his head and waved his hand in dismissal.

“Carry on with…whatever you were doing, I guess.” And with that, he’d turned on his heel and left.

“You, over there!” I was snapped out of my memories by the sound of someone yelling at me.

A lady in her late fifties was walking over to me as fast she could. Her face was adorned with a scowl.

“Are you one of the volunteer housemaids for the gala?” she asked me.

“Y-Yes ma’am. I’m Aurora Craton, ma’am.” I said, bowing my head.

I felt a light tap on my shoulder, and raised my head to see the lady holding her hand over her mouth.

“Rory?” she asked.

“Yes, ma’am,” I replied, not understanding her change in attitude.

She surprised me by giving me a big embrace.

“Oooh, Rory! The last time I saw you, you were just a little girl. Look how big you’ve grown!” She pushed me back, eyeing me from head to toe.

“Have you found a mate yet?” she inquired.

“Ummm, no, ma’am. I won’t be eighteen for a couple more days. Do…Do I know you?” I asked.

“Oh! I’m sorry, my child. I am Kala. The head housemaid for the leader’s house, and the village midwife. I knew your father, back when he was the pack’s gamma. I knew your mother as well.”

Her face turned mournful. “I was there the day she…” she trailed off. “I’m sorry I couldn’t save her, dear.”

I placed a hand on her shoulder to reassure her. “It’s ok, Mrs. Kala,” I said with a smile. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“So, you’re here to help us out for the big night tomorrow, hun?” she asked as she started walking off in the direction she’d come from.

I followed her.

“Yes ma’am. My stepmother offered my name. I’m sorry to say I didn’t even know that help was needed,” I said, scratching my head.

“Well, thank Goddess she did. We need all the help we can get,” she said. As she spoke, she opened two large, golden doors that led to an enormous hall.

No wonder they need all the help they can get, I thought.

This place was huge!

Aurora

It took us a full day and a half to prepare the place for the party.

Mrs. Kala told me that there would be more than six hundred guests, between our pack and the neighbouring ones, with which we shared a peace treaty.

Once we were done, Mrs. Kala sent me home to get a couple hours of rest. I had to be back at the leader’s house by nightfall. The gala wouldn’t begin until nine o’clock.

When I got home, I was greeted by the unpleasant sight of my stepmother walking around, nude.

“Eww!” I said loudly, to get her attention. “You know, these rooms were made specifically for our privacy. Not for walking around the house completely naked.”

I turned around, waiting for her to grab some clothes.

“Oh, sorry about that, hon. I wasn’t expecting you back so early. I just came from patrolling the southern area of the village,” she answered nonchalantly.

My stepmother was a seeker, with a keen sense of smell.

On occasion, the alpha assigned her to patrol, to see if she could sniff out the scent of the rogues that had been lurking around the border lately.

“Whatever.” I rolled my eyes at her, then went straight to my room and threw myself on my bed.

I tried to sleep, but sleep just wouldn’t reach me, so I got up and decided to head downstairs to prepare dinner.

Once I got to the first floor, I noticed that I was completely alone in the house. Montana must have gone out again.

I shrugged. “Better for me.”

I went into the kitchen and made some pasta, then sat in front of the TV and began looking for a movie to watch.

My phone began to ring. I looked down, smiling when I saw that it was my friend.

“Hey, Em,” I answered as I kept scrolling through the list of movies on the TV.

“So…how’d it go with cleaning and setting up for the grand party?” she asked.

“So far, tiresome. That place is enormous. I thought we’d never finish with the decorations.” I stuffed a forkful of pasta into my mouth as I spoke.

“Ugh, I can imagine. What time does it start?” she asked.

“I have to be there around five thirty. The whole ordeal starts at eight.”

“Do you know what time you’ll be off?” she asked.

“Not really, but i’m sure it won’t be anytime before twelve.”

“Well…that sucks. Guess I’ll just have to wish you a happy birthday tomorrow.”

“Yeah, they ordered me to leave my phone at home, so I won’t be reading any texts until I get back.”

Emma growled. “That sucks.”

Icouldn’t help but let out a giggle

We spent the rest of the evening chatting and laughing. I barely noticed the time flying by.

A few hours later, I found myself heading to the leader’s house. I presented myself at the gates, then headed inside.

Once inside, I went to the maid’s quarters, where I changed into my official uniform.

It consisted of a white button-up shirt with long sleeves, a red bow tie, high-waisted black pants, and black heels.

Once we were dressed, all the maids headed to the gala room, where the lights were dimmed. We each took out trays and prepared to receive the guests.

Mrs. Kala assigned each of us a certain area of tables that we were to keep our eyes on, then instructed us to stand against the wall nearest that section.

The place soon began to fill up with people, all dressed in their most expensive outfits.

The last ones to enter were our allies, the Blue Moon pack from the west.

Their alpha came in, along with his daughter, Tallulah Wilhelm. She was the most beautiful girl I’d ever seen.

She had this long, gorgeous blond hair, sun-kissed skin, and bright hazel eyes. Her entire being exuded perfection.

After them entered our pack’s gamma, Remus Boman, who was in his late twenties. He was hand-in-hand with his mate, Aspen.

Remus had dark brown hair, with a couple of gray strands here and there. He had brown eyes, and was one of the shortest men in our village.

But despite his small size, he was not only one of the smartest in the pack, but one of the strongest.

Next came the beta, Maximus Barone. He was tall, with dirty blond hair and green eyes.

All the girls were crazy about him, despite the fact that he was a womanizer. He was the second strongest in the pack.

Last but not least, the man of the hour stepped foot into the hall.

Our alpha, Wolfgang Fortier Gagliardi. If women went crazy over the beta, he was the real panty dropper.

He had a mop of jet black hair that always looked as if he’d just got out of bed, and eyes so blue they shined like sapphires.

He was huge, and I could see the muscles bulging under his clothes. It was like he’d been crafted by the Goddess herself.

But there was one problem with him…

The man did not know how to smile, or to be nice to anyone.

Even though he was drop dead gorgeous, his sneer, combined with his powerful alpha aura, made people run away from him.

Most of the time, he was seen only with his beta, who happened to be his childhood friend. Or with Tallulah, the daughter of another alpha.

For a moment, our eyes met, and his intense look left me rooted to my spot. It was only for a fraction of a second, but it was enough to cause a great stirring within me.

Once the alpha took his seat, everyone else did the same.

And so the party began.

It all went by so fast. I was so busy with my tables that I didn’t notice how quickly the time passed.

“Rory, Mrs. Karla needs you in the kitchen for a moment,” one of my coworkers said.

“I’ll be there in a minute,” I answered, picking up empty dishes and refilling some champagne flutes.

Once I entered the cooking area, I was attacked with confetti.

“Happy Birthday, Aurora!” Everyone shouted. A beautiful cake, sparkling with eighteen candles, was placed before me.

“Oh my Goddess! Guys, you shouldn’t have!” I said, looking at the cake in awe.

“Oh, c’mon! It’s not everyday you turn eighteen,” one of the cooks said.

“Yeah, pretty soon you’ll hear your wolf. Then you’ll be able to transform, and—,” Mrs. Karla drawled as she looked at everyone. “—find your mate!!”

I rolled my eyes as they all laughed.

After eating some cake, we all headed back up to the hall to continue with our work.

Suddenly, I heard a strange voice in my head.

“Hi, Aurora…” It was faint, but clear as the day.

It was my wolf. She had awoken at last

“Um…hello?” I answered in my mind.

She giggled, and came into view. Her fur was white as snow and her eyes were purple.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you. I am your wolf. My name is Rhea.” she said as she sat there, staring at me.

“The pleasure is all mine, Rhea” I replied. “I hope we can get alo—”

My words were cut short as a delicious scent filled my nostrils. The scent was a mixture of wild pine, almonds and amber.

It was captivating, almost as if it were pulling me toward it.

Rhea caught a whiff of it also. She put her nose high in the sky, sniffing.

Then she said something that shocked me to the core.

“Our mate is here. I can smell him.”
