Valerie

I stood in front of my small vanity and put my hair in a bun, I picked out a few strands to frame my face, and brought out my green eyes trying to look as professional as I could for my interview when I was actually more nervous than I ever was before.

I somehow landed an interview with none other than the ruthless lead warrior Adrien Grey after applying to a million places.

I knew that none of his past assistants managed to make it past a month working for him, he always fired them and hired new ones, the man was never satisfied and I hoped I wouldn't be one of them.

I put on my earrings when my phone began vibrating on the bed, startling me. “Hey, Stell!” I said as I picked it up and stared at my reflection.

“You ready? Need some Stella motivation?” Stella asked, making me laugh. Stella was my best friend ever since I could remember, she was like a sister to me and I loved her to death.

“Hell yeah! I’m going to ace this interview, he won’t have anyone to fire next month,” I said and she chuckled. I was pretending to be cheery and positive but I actually felt horrible.

“Well then, I just called to tell you good luck, love you.”

“Love you too, bye Stell.” I hung up and took a deep breath, to say I was scared was an understatement. I was terrified of that interview, no one messed with Adrien Grey and I really needed the job since the small business I worked for went bankrupt, and I couldn’t rely on my parents forever.

“Come on AJ, I have to drop you off early today,” I stood up and reached my hand out to my five-year-old sister who was sitting on my bed staring at her feet.

“But I wanna stay with you,” she crossed her arms and pouted making me smile.

“Angelina, I have to go to work today. I’ll come by after work okay?” I asked as I ruffled her hair. She just continued pouting and looking at me with her doe eyes that held all the shades of blue in them.

“No one plays with me at home,” she huffed. Despite our nineteen years age gap, she saw me as her best friend.

“Come on AJ, we’re going to be late.” I carried her up and out of my small cabin knowing she could sit there all day and pout and I didn’t have the time. My cabin was almost thirty minutes away from other houses as it was very close to the woods.

Angelina was my little sister, step-sister. We were both adopted by the Alpha and Luna of the silver moon pack at a young age.

Her parents were both warriors that got killed in an attack two years ago when she was only three years old. Luna Maxine and Alpha Archer took her in as their own as they did to me.

However, my father was very much alive. He just didn’t want me, not after my mom was shot in the head with a silver bullet and passed away. I was only five and he couldn’t even look at me.

He found a new mate immediately after my mom’s death and I hate him to this day. The trauma I went through at just five years old was unbearable and I didn’t even have my father by my side.

Luna Maxine was my mom’s best friend so she and the Alpha didn’t even think twice before adopting me.

I loved them so much, they were my family, along with my older brother Mason, who was the next Alpha of the pack since he wasn’t adopted, the eldest, and a male.

“Hey, mom! I’ll be back after my interview,” I yelled before pushing Angelina through the door and rushing back to my car, I couldn’t be late, not to my interview.

“Goodmorning, how can I help you?” A woman by the register said to me without even giving me a smile. She looked gorgeous and I felt so insecure in front of her, I knew I was pretty but that woman was gorgeous and she was eyeing my pantsuit making me feel naked.

“Uh- Hi. I am here for an interview with Mr. Grey.”

“Oh yes, Valerie Hale?” she asked and I nodded. She dialed a number on the phone and I stood there awkwardly shifting on my feet and staring at the papers in front of her.

“Okay, head to the 6th floor, Adrien will be with you soon.”

I nodded and walked over to the elevator, trying to keep my expression the same. Adrien? She called him by his first name, I wondered if they all on a first-name basis, or if she someone close to him.

As soon as I got to the 6th floor I looked around and felt my heart beating faster and with everyone’s werewolf super hearing they could all probably hear it.

The floor was nothing different from the first one, it was all grey and white, very plain, and had no decorations. It was really boring to look at.

If I had control over it, the building would be way more colorful and I would have paintings everywhere.

I sat down on a chair, I had no idea what to do. There was no one there and I couldn’t just go and knock on every door in the building. I turned and looked at the plant next to me and wished I was it.

I kept bouncing my feet and trying not to bite my fingernails out of nervousness.

I began picking my nails when I jumped at the sound of someone talking. “Sorry to keep you waiting, Mr. Grey is waiting for you.” A very nice man said and I smiled at him before walking over to the giant double doors he pointed at. So they were NOT on a first-name basis?

My heart was thumping in my chest and it was all I could hear in my head. The blood was rushing through my veins and I felt like I was walking to my death.

I hugged my files closer to my body and took a deep breath before pushing the doors open.

As soon as I turned to close the door my eyes widened. I was graced with a masculine, aromatic-woody scent that made my wolf purr in excitement. I turned around and felt my heart drop.

My eyes landed on the most gorgeous man in front of me. He looked like a Greek God.

His black hair was gelled back which complemented his tan skin beautifully and his aquamarine eyes were brighter than the sun itself.

I felt the dominance radiating off him as he sat still wearing a black suit while staring at me the same way I stared at him.

“It's mate!” My wolf Alaska yelped making my heart drop and I shook my head as the color drained from my face. Goddess! Adrien Grey couldn't be my mate. Something was definitely wrong, his stupid perfect face probably made every woman feel what I was feeling, but wolves were never wrong about mates?

My wolf began purring and whimpering. I cursed myself and cleared my throat, Goddess knew how long I was ogling him for. “Um- I’m here for the interview, you know the-”

“Get out,” he said in a controlled voice and my eyes went wide as I tightened my grip on my papers feeling my heart hammering against my ribcage, begging to be let out.

I stared at him dumbfoundedly and he stared back before shooting up on his feet and I stupidly took that as a gesture to walk closer to him.

I placed my files on his desk and looked back up at him, “but I didn’t even sit my interview,” I complained.

“Mr. Grey?” I questioned and he turned his head to the side, his shoulders stiffened as if he was controlling himself with every fiber in his body. He looked like he couldn’t breathe, he was holding his breathe for Goddess knows what reason, I knew I didn’t smell that bad, and if I was his mate I should have smelt amazing to him.

“Get out,” he growled at me and I took a step back as my brain stuttered and I paused.

“But I-”

“I SAID GET OUT,” he yelled and I gasped before rushing to the door, feeling the trembling of my hands as I fumbled with the door handle. I struggled to open it but finally got it and rushed out. “Son of a gun!” I spat out.

As soon as I was out of the damned office I bent and placed my hands on my knees while taking deep breaths, he scared me shitless and I wasn’t one to get scared, the power that dominated off him was unspeakable off, and those blue eyes, they were my weakness.

“You okay?” A voice asked and I looked up to find a guy staring at me with furrowed brows. “Yeah, all is good,” I smiled as I dried my sweaty palms on my pants before tucking the loose strands of my hair behind my ear.

“I’m Kade,” he said giving me his hands. I raised an eyebrow at him but took his hand nonetheless.

“Valerie, but I don’t think that matters,” I let out a nervous chuckle, “I don’t think you’ll be seeing me here again.”

“What did you do for him to lash out like that?” he asked.

“Nothing, I mean I don’t think so. I just walked in and got kicked out. He was in a bad mood I guess,” I said with a sigh. I wasn’t about to tell that stranger that it probably might have been because I was his mate.

“Well then, nice to see you,” he said before walking into the same office. Did he have a death wish? He didn’t even knock on the door, he just walked in like he owned the place.

I looked at the door and felt shivers run down my spine, my mate was hot, but he just ruined all my dreams about having a loving mate and us being deeply in love with each other like other mates.

The moon Goddess hated me and that was the only explanation for it. First my birth parents and then my mate. That interview had to be the worst interview I ever had.

I had no idea what I was supposed to do. Just never talk to him again and wonder what on earth happened to my mate?

Adrien

As soon as she stepped into my office, her scent was all over. The sweet, savory, aroma wafted through my office and my wolf almost lost control. It was all intoxicating and heavenly at once.

She turned around and her eyes locked with mine. She was beautiful, breathtaking even with her perfect figure.

I felt her breath hitch and I could hear her rapid heartbeat but it was nothing new, that was how every woman that walked into my office acted.

“MATE!” My wolf, Kai said. I wasn’t surprised, her scent and the way Kai loved it gave it all away. Kai began purring and I felt extremely uncomfortable, my wolf never did that, he was feared by all people and to see him purr?

I was in control of myself, I didn’t move an inch of my body. But then she walked closer and I knew couldn’t be in her presence anymore.

No one has ever made me feel threatened the way she did and I wasn’t up for it. I couldn’t take my eyes off her and that was weird. My heartbeat escalated and I pressed my lips into a straight line.

Then I knew what Kade was talking about when he said there was a pull when he met his Mate, Pheonix.

I held my breath, that was the best I could do to stop myself from hovering over her. I wasn’t going to give in to that damn mate bond so I yelled at her and kicked her out.

Horror and pain were plastered all over her face as she rushed out.

I felt bad. I never feel bad. But I didn't want a mate, I was doing fine all those years, so why would I need one? The one thing I was glad I never found, found me.

I didn't even have enough time with myself to take in what happened when Kade burst through the door without even knocking, nothing new.

I shook my head and looked up at him, “what do you want?”

“What did she do?” he asked and I huffed.

“Who?’ I asked, playing dumb.

“Don’t play dumb here, what did she do for you to lash out like that. You know how much you need an assistant and you keep putting all of them through hell.”

“She didn’t do anything, she’s my mate,” I said it like it was something casual. Kade’s eyes widened and he choked on his own spit before coughing and I just watched in amazement.

“Your mate?” he asked and I nodded.

“And you kicked her out without even holding the interview?”

“Yes?” I said, wondering what he was trying to do.

“Fucking hell Adrien.”

“I might be your best friend but I still am your boss Kade,” I said in a stern voice, they tended to forget their place.

“No, you just met your mate and kicked her out, without even an explanation. Everyone heard the way you yelled, probably even people on the other floors,” he said with a sigh.

“She probably knows, there is nothing for me to explain to her.” I shrugged.

“She probably knows that her mate doesn’t want anything to do with her? Definitely, because that common knowledge right!” he paused, “The poor girl, you know it’s not her fault she was paired with you. You’re a dickhead,” he said, but it was nothing new to my ears. Kade made sure to let me know I was an asshole every day.

“You know I don’t want a mate, I can’t have a mate, she’ll just be a weak point for me, and no one can know about her… they’ll hurt her,” I said, and I could never miss the way Kade just rolled his eyes.

“Well then, I hope you enjoy dealing with the fuss and gossip your stupid beliefs caused outside,” he said before standing up and walking to the door.

I pressed my lips into a thin line as I massaged my temples. It hadn't even been an hour and she was already trouble for me.

“Fucking hell.” I muttered as I sat down and stared at the door while fiddling with my pen, for some reason I couldn’t get my mind off her. There was something about her. There was this dedication radiating off her, not like the she-wolves that normally threw themselves at me. But then again, it was probably just the mate bond.

Her familiar sweet scent was still lingering in the air, and I couldn’t get her green eyes off my mind.

They were bright and soft but had flecks of strength and I couldn’t miss the stubbornness in them, no one answered back to me when I was angry like she did.

There was a warmth her brown hair brought to her features, it looked gentle in the light as it framed her face perfectly.

I shook away my thoughts, wondering just what the Moon Goddess was thinking by giving me a mate. My eyes landed on the files she forgot on my desk as I was deep in my thoughts.

I reached out and grabbed them so I could take a look.

Valerie Hale, that was her name. It rolled off my tongue as I tried to say it out loud, she had a beautiful name and from what I saw I think it described her well, her name meant strong, valiant.

She was perfect for the job, she had every qualification I needed and more.

I sighed before dialing the reception, “please call back Miss Hale, she starts tomorrow, seven o’clock,” I said before hanging up, I didn’t wait for a response, they always did as I said.

I was giving her the job. First, because it would stop whatever gossip I stirred, and she was actually perfect for the job. I was going to test her, her patience, and her strength.

But I knew she wasn’t going to make it past a month and I was going to make sure of it.

Chapter 2

Valerie

“Calm down Val, stop pacing, it’s giving me a headache,” Stella said, making my head snap to her direction.

“How can I calm down when Adrien freakin Grey is my mate, I swear the moon Goddess hates me!” I let out a huff as I ran my fingers through my hair. I was losing my mind more every second.

“He did give you the job though,” she smiled at me with a shrug. She was getting on my nerves, it seemed like she was enjoying it almost too much.

“I don’t know why he did that, I bet you he just wants to torture me, that damned son of a gun.”

“Ugh, Stella,” I groaned and fell back on my bed, “why does the world hate me so much?” I asked and tilted my head to look at her. First I lost my mom, then my dad basically wanted nothing to do with me, and then Adrien was my mate.

“Valerie, give the man a chance-” She started to say but I didn’t give her a chance to continue, “A CHANCE!?” I cut in, balancing up on my elbows as I glared at her.

“I really don’t know if you’re joking or not, you did not see the way he snapped at me,” I huffed and dropped back on the bed.

“The man looked like he couldn’t stand my scent, and his voice, so hot and sexy but damn scary.”

“You two can try and defy the mate bond as much as you want, but you won’t make it far,” Stella said, sounding so confident.

“Yeah well, not everyone has a perfect bond like you and Treyton.” Stella found her mate two years ago at a party I dragged her to. The two were inseparable ever since then and their love and attraction were unmatched. I used to be jealous of her but then got over it because I prayed I would find mine soon. Turns out the moon Goddess listened to me but punished me instead.

“I heard he’s hot though,” she said and I nodded. “He is so hot I think I melted when I walked into the room, and the mate bond didn’t help,” I sighed.

“Well, good luck to you tomorrow, I have to go back to Trey before he starts calling like a maniac,” she said as she hopped off my hanging chair and ruffled my hair.

“Ugh, you and Treyton, so unfair,” I whined, making her laugh. I’m glad she found my situation rather amusing because I didn’t.

“Thanks for the luck though, I definitely need it,” I said. She just winked at me and walked out.

Stella was my best friend since middle school, it all started when one of the guys was bullying her and stuck gum in her golden locks, so naturally I kicked his balls and got sent to the office right after, she came to apologize and we just hit it off.

She was always at my house, my house was hers. But ever since she met Trey, her visits became less and less, but she still made time for us and I love her for that.

When I told my mom I got the job she was overly excited. I left out the part where Adrien was my mate though or she would freak out.

She was eagerly waiting for me to find a mate and if I told her that he kicked me out, she might as well just kick his balls with me.

The next morning which I dreaded came way too soon, I had been up since 5:30 am and had to be at work by 7.

I couldn’t exactly sleep well at night with all the twisting and turning and the picture of Adrien's face invading my thoughts.

If Adrien wasn’t my mate and hadn’t lashed out on me like that, I would have been fine. But because he was my mate and I was freaking out too much.

I made it to the building and let out a shaky breath before I threw away my coffee cup in the nearest trash can, who knew what rules that asshole had.

I wasn’t about to get told off on my first day so I was extra cautious with everything.

“I see you made it,” that same woman from yesterday who I learned was called Sienna said, almost too rudely but I brushed it off. I nodded and gave her a smile, “I will show you your office.” She stood up and I followed her trying to hide the shock on my face. I had an office… I never had an office before, just a small cubicle.

“That’s Adrien’s office, and this is yours. There is a door from the inside too that leads to his office,” she said as we walked into my office and my mouth dropped. Great! My day just kept getting better and better.

“I will inform him that you’re here, he’ll be with you shortly,” she said before walking out and swaying her hips, as if she was showing me that she was better than me.

I had a pretty nice office. The office was painted white just like the rest of the building, and it had only one floor-to-ceiling window behind the black desk, which faced the main road.

On the desk sat a laptop, a notebook, and a little pen holder.

In the corner, the air conditioner was blasting at medium, and there was a lamp right beside it. An empty bookshelf sat in a corner collecting dust.

It was really big and spacious, not as big as Adrien’s though, but the light illuminating from the huge window made it look even bigger.

I sat awkwardly on my desk chair, fiddling with the pen holder when the door burst open. I jumped in my seat and dropped it on the floor. “Shit,” I muttered and quickly picked it up only to hear a sigh.

I looked up and my eyes met with his blue orbs that seemed to never hold any emotions. I straightened my back and gave him the best smile I could.

“Uh- Good morning?” I stuttered.

“Don’t act like we’re friends,” he scoffed making my eyes go wide, I was not acting like I was his friend, I was merely just being nice and professional but I guess that wasn’t allowed either. Jerk.

He walked closer to my desk and dropped a giant stack of papers. I let out a cough and held back my shock as I stared at the biggest pile of papers I'd seen.

“You are required to sign this contract,” he said and turned the paper that sat on top so that I can read it.

“Contract for what?” I asked.

“You're my assistant, I'm the lead warrior so you realize that here you’re going to be working for the pack, you will know of our plans and attacks, things that are confidential. So if you decide to go against us, this contract will determine your fate.”

“Are you saying-” I paused, “I would never betray my own pack!” I looked up at him and he had the same permanent scowl on his face.

“I never said you would Miss Hale, read the contract thoroughly, and sign it,” he paused. “After that, I want you to proofread every single one of these papers, sign where it needs to be signed and I want them in my office by the end of today.” He pointed at the mountain of papers and turned to walk away.

“What-” the words blurted out of my mouth making his head snap back, “I mean- I,” I paused and stared at the papers dumbfoundedly. “I’m supposed to get off at five, this would take me until midnight if not tomorrow,” I pointed at them.

“You wanted this job and you got it, now you will do it the way I want you to do it. If you don’t want to get fired on your first day of course,” he said and I noticed that his expression never ever changed, he always looked cold and closed off.

“Why are you doing this?” I asked. I couldn’t help it and I had to know.

“I mean, you know I’m your mate, so why are you acting like this,” I said as I pointed at the distance between us.

He stalked towards me and I instantly regretted ever opening my mouth as my heart pounded in my chest. I should have just started with the papers and shut up.

“If you thought I was going to treat you any differently because you were my mate, then you are very wrong. I don’t want a mate and I never asked for one. You just had to show up,” he said while glaring at me, I felt like I would faint as he stared deep into my soul but at the same time, I found it very hot.

“I will treat you the same way I treat everyone. You won’t get any special treatment for being my mate, and I don’t care if you’re the Alpha’s daughter.”

“No one hears about this, as far as anyone knows, you’re just my assistant, got it?” he asked and I nodded before quickly sitting down and taking the first paper while my heart pounded int my chest. I stared at the paper and acted like he wasn’t there until I heard the door close.

“Asshole”, I muttered before I spun my chair and stared at the view outside.

I could see people walking and talking and I envied them. I was stuck in a nice office with my mate next door, my mate who wanted nothing to do with me.

He knew nothing about me and yet here he was, judging me for being the Alpha’s daughter.

Whenever people found out they would assume things about me and treat me differently.

Little did they know, my life was far from perfect.

“Let’s get to work,” I clicked my tongue and cracked my fingers before I began reading the very boring papers in front of me. I don’t even know why he gave it to me, it all seemed like nonsense and unnecessary things. I mean, one of the papers dated back to a rogue fight from five years ago.

“Hi Stella,” I said in a groggy voice as I answered her call. It was 6 pm and I was nowhere near done and I really could use a break.

“Hey Val, how was your day,” she asked and I let out a laugh. Was? My day was far from over.

“Bad, really bad, he gave me an abnormally huge stack of papers, and I am nowhere near done. He’s torturing me using his power,” I groaned before dropping my head on the table a bit too hard resulting in a loud bang.

“Jeez, are you okay? What was that,” Stella asked.

“Oh, it’s nothing,” I said when the door burst open.

“I assume you’re done with the papers?” Adrien asked while he looked at me, still no emotions on his face.

I quickly pulled the phone down from my ear and shook my head. My heart thumped in my chest and I forgot how to breathe. First day and I pissed him off.

“Well then I suggest you get off the phone and finish your work, I can hear you in my office, I did not hire you so you could call your friends,” he said before turning around and shutting the door.

I winced when the door closed and looked at my phone, “you heard the colossal beast, gotta go,” I whispered and hung up.

Stupid son of a gun, I couldn't even take a break. I was starting to regret my decision to work for him.

I yawned and walked into his office at almost midnight, I was struggling to keep my eyes open after staring at thousands of papers for the entire day.

I was surprised to see him still there, working and looking unaffected at all, he looked so beautiful.

“Your papers,” I said as I tried to place them on his desk but I didn’t push them far enough. The papers slid down and were all over the place, some still on his desk and some all over the floor.

I jumped back and winced when he slammed his hands on the table. “I am so sorry, I just am tired and I-” I said but quickly closed my mouth when he looked like he was about to snap my neck.

“You can’t do one thing right! I have a lot on my plate right now and I don’t need your clumsiness added to it,” he yelled and I was not about to mess with a warrior so I just bent down and quickly picked up the papers from the floor all while he looked at me. I felt very insecure while doing so, I could feel his eyes on me with every move I made.

“I’m really sorry about that, it won’t happen again,” I said while looking up at him. I did not want to apologize, who did he think he was? But I did anyway because I needed my job.

He nodded and pointed at the door, “it better not.”

I walked to the door and turned to look at him.

I was going to tell him to have a goodnight but decided against it, he got pissed in the morning when I wished him a good morning, and besides, I did not want him to have a good night.

I hoped he tossed and turned like a chicken on a grill and had nightmares that haunted him for the rest of his life. Idiot.

I decided to go back to my parent's home instead of my little cabin since I promised Angelina that I would. She was most likely asleep by then but I wouldn’t break my promise.

“Valerie!” I heard my mom as soon as I opened the door.

“Hi mom,” I said and walked into the living room where she was sitting with my father who was on his laptop.

“It’s late, why are you two awake?” I asked and plopped down on the chair.

“I could ask you the same, who works this late on their first day!! I was waiting for you and giving your dad some company.”

“My boss overloaded me with work,” I huffed and looked at my father, “dad, what do you know about Adrien Grey?” I asked.

“Ah! Adrien is one hell of a man, I wouldn’t be able to handle these attacks without him, why?”

“Just asking,” I shrugged, “he’s my boss,” I said as I bit my lip and felt my face heat up. I could feel my mom’s eyes burning into my soul, she knew something was up.

“You sure?” she asked and I nodded while trying to avoid her gaze.

“Valerie-”

“He’s my mate,” I blurted out. I knew he said not to tell anyone but see if I care, and these were my parents.

The room fell silent and both of them were looking at me with their lips parted, if their jaws could reach the floor they would have.

“Uh?” I waved my hand in front of them.

“OH MY GOD MY BABY, FINALLY I’M SO HAPPY FOR YOU,” my mom jumped up and squealed before pulling me in for a crushing hug.

“I’m happy for you Valerie, he’s a good man,” my father smiled before giving me a hug too.

I stood there awkwardly and looked at them smiling, I had no idea how to break it to them, “yeah, um, that’s the thing,” I let out a laugh, “he wants nothing to do with me.”

“He rejected you!?” My father said, his eyes ready to kill.

“No he didn’t, he’s just, I don’t know. So cold.”

“Oh then I’m sure he’ll come around, he’s a warrior it’ll just take him a bit to accept it,” my mom smiled and I just nodded. They had no idea what he did. The man was known for having a different girl in his bed every night, so I doubted he would want to settle down with his dick.

It hurt when I thought about it. I saved myself for my mate when he was going around and bedding a different girl every day.
