Life and death flowed through the halls of the hospitals but none of it was supernatural save for one tiny life. I followed the pull of this new life, excited by the prospect of her existence.
I turned the corner to the maternity ward and was greeted by a dear friend.
“Sage! What are you doing here?” Lily’s hair swirled around her face.
I embraced her tightly. “I’ve come to talk to you about the babe.”Everything around was a pile of garbage, just like my day seemed to be. I picked up the last of the trash bags and tossed them into the truck’s be
“My granddaughter, she’s barely four hours old! How could you possibly know about her?” She pulled away and put her hands on her hips.
I laughed. “The same way I know about everything.”
She waved her hands at me. “Right, oracle. I always seem to forget. Well, come in and see her.”
Lily led me into the door to our left. The woman lying on the bed looked incapable of conversation. I glanced at the label on her iv and rolled my eyes. Morphine.
A man stood beside the bed; he grabbed the railing knuckles white with anger.
“Who the hell are you?”
“Richard! Sage is a close friend of mine. She came to see the baby.” Lily chided Richard but made for the bassinet on the far side of the room.
A frail boy stroked the infant’s head. “Gran, isn’t she perfect.”
Lily scooped the baby up and cradled her close. “Austin, she is.”
“She’s far from perfect, she wasn’t a match for Austin. We needed her bone marrow to match! Elaine went through hell with this pregnancy and it was all for nothing!” Richard’s words held a venom that a proud father wouldn’t have been able to muster.
“You knew there was a chance that the baby wouldn’t be a match. And Elaine was beyond excited to have a daughter. Stop being hateful.” Lily handed her to me.
I looked down at the sleeping girl and was shocked by her white hair. I hadn’t expected it to be so pale given everyone else’s coloring. Her cheeks were pink, and she was pleasantly chubby.
She was the cherub baby any parent would want. I smiled knowing that this little girl was something special and only Lily and I would ever know.
Elaine moaned from her bed and Richard put his hand on her forehead. “Mom, why don’t you take your friend out for coffee. I’m going to have the nurse take the baby to the nursery so Elaine can rest.”
I went and sat the baby back in the bassinet. Her brother started rubbing her check with more affection than her father probably ever would.
Lily and I went out into the hall and wrapped my arm around her. I knew her son’s anger was uncalled for and could see it cut her to the core.
“Don’t let him get to you. You need to be strong for that little girl. She’s going to need your wisdom as a wolf goddess.”
She looked at me and the awe filling her eyes was all I needed to know that the babe was in the right hands. “She’s one of us?”
“Yes. She’s so very special. I’m not sure what the moon holds for her ability wise, but I know she will be with wolves one day. Her mate is going to make sure of that.”
She pulled from my grasp. “Her mate?” She stepped closer to me. “A werewolf is going to take her as its mate?”
I nodded my head. “He’s a good boy; he can seem dense but like any wolf he’ll be a good mate.”
Lily rubbed her forehead. I could tell she was apprehensive. “I’m not going to be able to tell her what she is. Richard would make sure she believes I’m insane.”
I reached out and gripped her shoulder firmly. “Then simply lay the groundwork. Ensure that she will respect non-humans. Help her grow into someone that can contend with a male wolf. She needs to know that fate has a funny way of making things work. We’ll be sure when the time comes, he’ll court her. It’s the polite and practical thing to do.”
Lily chuckled. “Practical, wolves aren’t practical.” She quieted. “Are you sure about all of this?”
I pulled her into a hug. “Yes, and as long as she has you to guide her, she will be able to cope with the unexpected and foreign idea of a wolf lover.”
She hugged me in return. She didn’t say much but I didn’t blame her. Knowing the fate of her granddaughter added a weight she hadn’t been expecting. I didn’t want to tell her how special the babe was.
She’d been created for a purpose that wasn’t met at birth and now she had a new one. Lily would have a difficult time with her son’s anger when it came to raising the child wild.
Though if anyone was up to the challenge it was Lily.
I released her from my grasp. “Go make sure that girl is safe. She’s going to need your love and protection.”
“Thank you, Sage.” She turned and headed back to the room.
I left; in time I would see them both again but for now I was needed elsewhere.

Everything around was a pile of garbage, just like my day seemed to be.
I picked up the last of the trash bags and tossed them into the truck’s bed. I lifted the tailgate, but it couldn’t close because of the number of bags in the bed.
It was all old, rusty, molded and falling apart. I climbed up, sat down on the gate, and tapped the side of the truck signaling I was ready to go.
The truck’s engine rattled, the smell of exhaust accompanied the trash smell perfectly.
Dan gave me a thumbs up from the cab, I could barely see him over the pile of trash, and it made me think he was buried beneath it.
I would have been fine with that annoying piece of shit that he was. He couldn’t take the hint that I had moved past our short-lived relationship.
The truck hit a bump and I came down hard on the tailgate. I groaned. I’d add that bruise to the collection I’d received today.
If it wasn’t the training my father was drilling into me or the emptying of the trash, I was going to end up in pain one way or another.
The truck backfired and smoke filled my nose and I broke out into a coughing fit.
I didn’t think that my day could get any worse, but I was usually wrong. Dan turned the truck onto the road to the main dump and I could see the walkers creeping up through the trees.
Great, just great and I had to jinx myself.
I pointed to the woods and the passenger in the truck behind us looked to where I was pointing. He shook his head and pulled a bat out from behind the driver’s seat.
It was as if my punishment for back-talking wasn’t good enough, walkers were added to the mix. Trash day with the men and walkers, goody goody.
As all the trucks rolled to a stop, I jumped from the tailgate and headed for the gate. It was open, and I let my head roll in annoyance.
I slipped the ax I used from its holder and readied myself for what was sure to be the icing on the cake. A few men moved up beside me and we crept forward slowly.
“Do you see anything?”
I clenched my jaw. “No. But I’m sure they’re coming now Dan.” He couldn’t keep his mouth fucking shut for five seconds.
A group of walkers shuffled around the far side of the main trash compactor. How could they have pushed the gate open? We moved into the yard and started picking away at the group of walkers.
Their decaying flesh overpowered the smell of rotting garbage and I fought not to gag. I pulled my ax out of one’s head and turned to take the next, but it wasn’t a walker I bumped into.
I ran right into the chest of one big ass, mother fucker and I had no idea who he was. I looked up and felt like I had to fall back to keep looking at this guy.
When I finally met his eyes, I felt panic set in. Yellow eyes, yellow wolf eyes and they were looking right at me.
I stepped back and he followed my movement. I didn’t know if I could outrun this guy but I was going to try. I scrambled backwards and headed back into the horde of walkers.
I didn’t want to look back, but I couldn’t help myself. The werewolf pushed back two of the men that I had come with, knocking them out of his way.
Green tentacles shot out from behind him and into the head of some surrounding walkers. Oh, it had a tentacle monster with it, fuck!
I took the turn around the main building too tightly and ended up cutting my hand on the corner. I hissed, clenched my hand into a fist and tucked it against my body.
I slid beneath a large pile of boxes and trash bags. I settled beneath the boxes and did my best to rub my hand in the dirt beside me.
I took deep settling breaths and hoped he didn’t hear or smell me.
I focused on a memory and wondered if this was the wolf, the wolf that would steal me away.

I looked up at the candle sitting in the window. It shouldn’t have been there, Gran had been gone for years and her house should be empty. I squared my shoulders and walked up the front porch steps.
Dad had seen the candle from the telescope, and he had made me come and check it out. I pushed the door open and stepped inside.
I left it open and turned into Gran’s sitting room. I stopped because I hadn’t been expecting a woman. I really hadn’t been expecting a human but there she was. She looked up and smiled.
Her silver hair floated around her, like it was caught in a breeze. Even in the dim candle light the adornments in her hair shined with bright colors and reflected the light.
She was dressed like my gran would have been dressed; like a hippie.
She patted the floor next to her. “Come sit. It took you long enough to get here. Would you like some tea dear?”
I furrowed my brow but went and sat down beside her. I knew I shouldn’t have but she didn’t make me feel ill at ease at all. I took the cup she offered and looked into its dark contents.
“Go on, drink dear. It will help you think clearly. You have dozens of questions floating through your mind, but I only have the time for one.” Her smile was encouraging but her words left me confused.
I took a long drink from the cup and was instantly warmed. It reminded me of the rum Dan, and I used to sneak from his father’s liquor cabinet.
I looked back down into the cup and I could see my faint reflection in it.
I looked at her. “I’m lost. Where the hell am I supposed to go?”
I set the glass on the floor and got up. What the hell was I doing? I didn’t know this woman; how could I trust her. It made me feel ridiculous to ask such a stupid question too.
“When the wolf comes, let him take you. He’ll take you to where you’re supposed to be.”
“A wolf or a werewolf?”
“A werewolf child. You are meant to be with wolves. He won’t hurt you, if that’s what you’re concerned about.”
I didn’t respond to her but headed out the door and closed it behind me. She wasn’t an issue she could stay. I jumped off the porch and headed back to the main compound.
When I looked back at Gran’s house the candle was gone and I was guessing so was the woman.

A loud thump against a compactor brought me back to my current situation. I could hear dripping against the boxes, and it made me wonder what it was.
“She is nearby, she glows brightly for a human. Are you sure she’s human?” The tentacle monster’s voice made my skin crawl. I didn’t understand how something like that could sound like liquid and make sense.
“My oracle said she was human, and you are a seer. You are looking for a human’s glow.” The wolf’s voice made my body react and it wasn’t a reaction I had expected. It was rough, deep and held an animal edge.
“Yes, I am a seer and as you know I don’t see for free.” It was a seer, fuck me. If my aura was as bright as it was saying, they would find me in no time.
“You will receive your payment once your job is complete here and we return to the hotel.”
“Good. Check under the boxes then.” The snark in his voice was enough to piss me off.
The boxes started moving and I knew it would be seconds before they were on me. I slid over to a compactor and pressed myself beneath it trying to get free. It wasn’t any use.
The wolf’s hand wrapped around my ankle and pulled me for beneath it.
He pulled me to him, one of his knees between my legs and he pinned my hands above my head. I watched his eyes as he looked over me.
He started with my hands and paused on the cut but didn’t linger for too long. He leaned down and growled. If he was trying to scare me, it wasn’t working. I didn’t scare that easy.
I pushed my knee into his groin and pushed his head away with mine. He pushed me back into the ground again.
His growl was deeper this time and I had the strangest thought of how it would feel against my skin. Not only that but how would his skin feel against mine.
He easily pushed himself off of the ground without letting me go. He lifted me from the ground and tossed me over his shoulder.
If he was really the wolf that was going to take me where I needed to go, then I was going to let him.
My new companions and I headed back around the building and there was a trail of carcasses leading to the gate. The men were on the far side of the trash yard and I could see Dan amongst them.
He saw us and came running. He yelled my name, but I didn’t feel anything in response to his voice. He loaded his crossbow, raised it but didn’t fire.
From the look on his face I knew he wouldn’t even try.
Wolf, since I doubt, he had a real name, threw me into the back seat of a station wagon. I hadn’t noticed it before because of the walkers.
Which now I knew had been a distraction caused by Wolf and his slimy friend. He closed the door and the climbed in the front.
Wolf handed me a first aid kit. I took it from him and opened it. I knew he had spotted my hand. I pulled the bottle of outdated antiseptic out and poured it over my hand.
I hissed through the sting of it. The dirt dripped from my hand and I wiped it on the cleanest part of my pants’ leg. I took the roll of gauze out and wrapped my hand in it.
I did my best to tie it but had to tuck the pieces inside. I put the remaining antiseptic and bandages back in the box.
I looked up and Wolf was watching me in the rear view. His eyes were predatory and from the look of them he had successfully captured his prey.

Twilight. My parents had always called twilight the time of monsters. When they crept out of the trees and devoured you.
I didn’t know if I was going to be devoured but I didn’t know what the monster in the front seat really wanted. The old woman hadn’t really been specific, and he hadn’t said much either.
I looked out of the window and he was driving us through a small shanty town. He pulled up alongside a group of scantily clad women. He rolled his window down and hung a piece of gold chain out.
One of the women came up and took it. Wolf nodded to the passenger side of the car, she came around and got in.
She looked at me and slapped her knees. “Oh, this is going to be so much fun! It’s been so long since I’ve taken part in an orgy!”
I swallowed. An orgy. I didn’t want any part of an orgy. I reached for the door handle, but Wolf let a growl slip from his lips. I pulled my hands into my lap and looked at the floorboards.
Nothing got past him.
The prostitute tapped the seat next to her and I slid over. She took my hand in hers. “I’m Charlene. I promise I won’t let them hurt us.”
I shook my head. She had no idea what else was in that front seat. I knew she couldn’t see Slimy since he’d sunk down in the seat as we had approached the women.
I was sure we were in for a whole world full of hurt.
***
We drove until we reached another, larger town. He drove a little way into the town but stopped when we reached a large warehouse. Wolf maneuvered the station wagon into a makeshift parking space.
He got out of the car and opened the door for us. We slid across the seat; when we got out Charlene didn’t let go of my hand.
Wolf placed his hand on my upper arm and ushered us up the stairs on the side.
He led us down a hall and stopped in front of a door. He pulled a key from his pocket and unlocked the door. He pushed it open and stepped aside. He didn’t have to say what he wanted; we went inside.
The door clicked closed behind us and I looked around. There were two rooms; a sitting area and a sleeping area. Wolf took my upper arm and led me to the bedroom.
He pushed me inside, I tripped over the rug but managed to stay upright.
I looked at Charlene and she had noticed Slimy. We made eye contact and I knew that she was even more scared than I was.
I stepped forward, screw this, she didn’t deserve whatever was about to happen to her. Before I could even get to the doors, Wolf closed and locked them.
He turned around and was in my personal space in an instant. I backed away from him, but he stayed within inches of me. I bumped into a wall; he’d backed me into a corner.
He had been hunting at the compactors and now he was about to eat his prey.
He pressed himself tightly to me and I felt small. None of the men at my home compound were as big as he was. He put his head down beside mine and growled.
It wasn’t as menacing as before, and my body reacted before I could even think. I grabbed the top of his pants and pulled him tighter against me.
I brushed my face against his and my breath shuddered when I inhaled.
He turned his face and pressed his lips against my ear. “Get undressed.”
He backed away from me and started pulling his clothes off. I swallowed hard. I didn’t know what I had been expecting but naked was not it.
I looked at his body and it was nothing but muscle, skin and bone. I couldn’t help but look at him and I felt the heat rush through my body.
He stepped back a little more and I watched the muscles in his body move beneath his skin and my heart picked up in response.
“What if I don’t want to get undressed?” I crossed my arms over my chest.
He looked at me and it spoke volumes. “I would prefer if you did not make this difficult.”
“Difficult! You’re the one that kidnapped me. I think I’m allowed to make this difficult.”
He straightened, showing his full height. Even doing that he looked away and showed his vulnerability. “I want this to be mutual.”
Mutual? He didn’t want to force himself on me; that was oddly reassuring. “What happens if I say yes?”
He licked his lips and I watched his tongue slide between them. “You will not regret it.”
I turned away from him. I shook my head, pulled my shirt off and tossed it to the floor. I pulled my hair over my shoulder and tugged the braid loose, ruffling it as I went.
I turned around and the wolf was watching me. His chest rose and fell in deep heaves. I bent forward and undid my boot laces, but I kept my eyes on the wolf in front of me.
I pulled my boots and socks off, then slowly stood back up. He hadn’t moved. I didn’t know why I was going through with this but part of me knew this was supposed to happen.
I closed my eyes, undid my pants and pushed them down my hips.
When I opened my eyes again, Wolf had invaded my space once more. He grabbed my hair, pulled it through his fingers and raised it to his face, inhaling deeply. I hadn’t expected him to smell it.
He lowered his head down to my neck and nipped at the hollow of my jaw. I reacted and grabbed his biceps.
His chuckle was low. “Get on the bed.”
The urge to listen to him was irresistible. I didn’t understand but I didn’t want to say no to him. I walked past him and climbed up the bed; I knew he was watching every movement.
I pressed my back against the wall and pulled my hair out from behind and under me. Wolf moved over to the bed and every part of him was predatory. He even crawled up the bed like an animal.
He reached out, grabbed my ankle and pulled my leg to him. He leaned down and ran his nose against my ankle. He looked up at me through dark hair.
I knew my body was going to be his in a moment, but I didn’t know if I was going to survive this encounter. I was really hoping I did.
He pulled on my leg and tugged my body down the bed. He finished moving up the bed and hovered above me. I reached up and ran my fingers through his hair and pulled.
He moaned. “Woman…”
“Eska. My name is Eska.”
He looked down at me. “Eska.”
I nodded my head. He grabbed the back of my head and kissed me. I wrapped my arms around him and responded in kind. I pushed my tongue into his mouth, and he sucked it.
I dug my nails into his back, and he pulled my hair in response. He reached down with his empty hand and ran his fingers against my clit and labia. I arched my body against his.
This wolf was touching me in a way I had never been touched before and I liked it. He pulled his mouth from mine and returned it to my throat. He nipped at the delicate flesh and I moaned.
He pulled the skin into his mouth and sucked at it. I writhed beneath him and I managed to wiggle a leg free. He took advantage of the opening and pushed a finger into me.
“Wolf…“The name held the edge of a moan.
He moved his mouth to my shoulder and bit into it. I cried out again, even though it was painful he was pleasing me too and I couldn’t separate the feelings.
He pulled away from my body and looked at me again.
My blood ran from the corners of his lips. “Never forget that.”
I kissed him and I knew I never would. Wolf pulled us into a sitting position, and I straddled his waist. His cock was hard and ready between us. I took it in my hand and ran my thumb over his tip.
His head fell back, and it exposed his throat. I pushed myself up and traced a line on his throat with my nose.
He pressed my head down to his shoulder. “Bite.”
His chest was rising heavily against mine. I pressed my lips to his shoulder and bit him. He squeezed my ass as I dug my teeth into his shoulder.
He moaned my name and I bit him harder; I could taste blood. He pulled my head away from his shoulder and kissed me roughly. I positioned myself over him and he guided my body on to him.
It was incredible feeling someone like him inside of me. I kept kissing him and he lowered us back down to the mattress and pulled out of me. I whimpered. He pushed back in and I met him eagerly.
Over and over we met until I felt my body contract. He thrust into me twice more and moaned my name again.
He pushed himself away from me and I covered my face. I took deep gulps of air trying to catch my breath. I had sex with a werewolf, a closer to animal than man werewolf and I liked it.
I turned to look at him and he was looking at me. He rolled to his side and pulled me against him. He pushed the hair out of my face and ran his nose against mine.
He kissed me. “You are my mate now and I am yours. Through blood and bite, sex and seed you now belong to me.”
Oh fuck.
