JAMIE

I released a sigh as I glanced down at my silver wrist watch and realised the time: 12:15 pm.

Could the day go any slower! It feels like it was yesterday when I crawled out of my bed and into this office.

Sitting behind my desk at Knight & Son, I was praying for the day to fly so I could leave at 6pm and be at Lacey’s bar by 6:15pm. I had high hopes.

Lacey's was our spot to hang out on Friday nights after a long work week.

Our as in Carmen, Ethan and I. We had been friends for years.

“Jamie!” Harry Knight's voice called.

I looked up from my computer. I noticed the stack of files that he was carrying in his arms.

“Do you mind doing some photocopying for me?”

I liked that he asked if I minded, even though he was the boss and his personal assistant was supposed to do exactly as he said.

I'd only been working at Knight & Son for a couple of weeks, but it was obvious how sweet a man he was.

NOT LIKE IN A SEXUAL WAY. GOD NO.

He was in his fifties. He was just easy to work for.

“Sure, no trouble.”

My lips curved into a smile as I took the files from his hands

“I'll get these done ASAP, Mr Knight.”

He smiled in return.”Thanks, darling. Remember, it’s just Harry—Mr Knight is too formal.”

I chuckled.

“Harry. I will get used to that, I promise.”

He walked down the corridor towards the lifts and I got back to my work.

This is going to be a long day!

I rested my back against the wall and folded my arms over my chest as I let the photocopier do its thing.

I released a yawn, now feeling the exhaustion of my four hours’ sleep.

I’d spent most of the night on my couch drinking glass after glass with my best friend-stroke-roommate, Carmen.

She was drowning her sorrows after the dumping of her life…and I was getting drunk on corner-shop wine to keep her company.

Because, you know, that's what best friends do.

I haven't dated much; there's always been that fear of getting hurt, the fear of heartbreak. That's not saying that I'm a virgin or anything—I'm definitely not that.

I've been with a few guys, but the relations were swift.

I had finished up the photocopying and walked across the office space with a stack of fifty stapled copies in my arms.

Give me strength!

Everyone had gone to lunch, so there was a nice quiet instead of the usual chitchat.

I pulled the handle of Mr Knight's office and pushed the door in with my bum since my hands were full.

I turned around…and didn't expect to see what I saw:

The tanned, toned, bare ass of Mason Knight.

His trousers were half down his legs as he banged Jen from the finance department.

Right on top of his father's desk.

“Harder,” she moaned in delight, and he moved at a more rapid pace.

When she opened her eyes and saw me standing there she let out a screech and covered her Humongous Fake Tits.

“Oh my God, Mason!”

Mason Knight paused, twisted around, and set his dark eyes on me, the kind of eyes that would have anyone cowering at his feet.

He had only known the feeling of pure anger in his life, it was obvious.

“Jesus Christ—get the fuck out.”

Frankly he was lucky it was me that had caught him and not Harry. It was already clear to me that father and son did not get on.

I closed the door in a panic and scurried back to my desk with the photocopies still in hand; it wasn’t like the man was in the position to take them off me.

I sat back down behind my desk, heat in my cheeks, feeling absolutely mortified.

Why didn't you just bolt, Jamie?? Such an idiot.

I decided to bury my head in my work for the rest of the day, and it wasn't long before my colleagues were coming back from their lunch break.

Let me tell you about Mason Knight. A billionaire heartthrob with looks that cause most women to stop and stare as he walks by.

Dark hair, intense eyes to match, not forgetting those tight fitted suits brings his whole look together.

BUT HIS PERSONALITY STINKS.

He's an asshole through and through, not a kind or thoughtful bone in his body.

When he sets his sights on a woman, she's his for one night and one night only—at least that's the gossip around the office.

“Jamie!” Mason’s harsh voice called.

He was standing by the doorway, now dressed enough to look at. His arms were crossed and he looked mad.

“My office. Now.”

Without a word I stood and crossed the room, shaking in my four-inch mary-janes.

Just be polite and maybe he'll forget the whole thing…

He had already sat down in the black leather swivel chair behind his desk. He glared at me as I closed the door behind me.

As my mother always said, if looks could kill…

My hands fidgeted in front of me. That's how nervous he was making me, like I was back in school being told off by a teacher.

“Jamie.” He sat forward in his chair.”You disrespected me back there by walking into my office unannounced. You should know you're supposed to knock before you come in.”

Prick.

“Well, your dad—”

“I don't care about my dad,” he cut across me. “My dad might be okay with it, but I'm sure as hell not.”

His dad doesn't have anything to hide. Unlike him.

Why the hell was he banging a woman during office hours? That was not very professional of him.

“Your Dad asked me to leave some photocopying on his desk and I didn't think anyone was in here. I definitely didn't think that you would be doing that!”

Mason furrowed his brows.”You mean fucking? It's just a word, Jamie, don't be afraid to use it.”

Heat spread up my cheeks for the second time, and I looked away in embarrassment

“I'd rather not. It's not very professional.”

He stood from his chair and walked around the desk towards me. As he got closer I inhaled his expensive cologne.

“Oh, now you care about being professional, after walking in on me.”

“Well, what you were doing wasn't very professional,” I found myself blurting.

The words had gone and I couldn't take them back. I was left wincing at the thought at it.

Oh, God, I'm so sacked.

His face turned into an even bigger scowl, just like I had expected

“I highly suggest you hold back the attitude and get back to work. Unless you want the sack before you even get your first pay slip?”

Jesus, Jamie, what's up with you and sleazy bosses?

“Okay,Mason,” I replied, hoping he would let the subject go and be done with it, “I'll just get back to work.”

I was trying my best not to look at him, at the face that so intimidated me.

“It's Mr Knight. I'm your boss. Get used to calling me that.”

His biceps were visibly tense in the white fitted shirt he was wearing. He was adamant that I call him Mr Knight, whereas his father, being the nice man he is, asked me to call him Harry.

Like I said: prick.

The office door opened. Harry walked in and looked between the two of us.

I was sure he could feel the tension.

“Is everything okay in here?”

I stood silent and waited for Mason to speak. I was hoping he would explain the situation however he wanted to explain it.

By lying, of course.

“Everything is fine,” Mason answered abruptly, taking his eyes off me and walked back to his seat.

Not taking his son’s word for it, Harry looked in my direction. “Is everything okay, Jamie?”

“Sure, everything is fine,” I echoed, mustering a smile for Harry’s sake. “I was just wondering if fifty copies were enough? Or would you like me to do more?”

“Fifty is fine, thanks, darling.”

I nodded and turned to leave the office.

After what had just happened, I wanted nothing more than to cower behind my desk until it was time to go.

“Jamie,” Mason said, and I paused to face him. He was rested back in his chair, looking very smug, very pleased with himself.

“Yes, Mas—I mean,Mr Knight?” I stumbled. It was quite clear by the look on his face that he was finding it amusing.

“Grab me a coffee, would you? I'm drained.” He s.

I'm sure you fucking are, was exactly what I felt like saying, but of course I couldn't—not if I wanted to keep my job.

He had never asked me to grab him coffee before. I knew this was his spiteful way of getting back at me.

“Right away. I'll be back with that.”

I left, trying my best to hold back the bitch inside of me. She only came out on a rare occasion.

Mason Knight was going to get that rare bitch moment at some point.

There wasn’t a man I disliked more.

JAMIE

I've been slaving for Mr Knight all day.

Not the father—the son.

Since I had caught him and Jen he’d had me running around like a headless chicken. His way of punishing me.

It was quite clear that he had it in for me now, and I was not all that fond of him either.

My phone rang on the desk beside my computer. I glanced down and saw it was from Ethan.

Why am I not surprised? I'm sure he's checking in to see how long I will be, and I don't even clock off for 15 minutes.

“Ethan!”

“We're at Lacey's already and there's a drink here with your name on it. I hope you're on your way?”

Impatient much?

“I’ve not finished work yet—six, in case you forgot.”

I picked up my black bag, a designer one that my parents had spoilt me with last Christmas. I threw my things into it.

“Well, hurry. Carmen’s only had one and she's already being a huge pain in my ass.”

He chuckled. I could hear Carmen's cheery voice in the background giving out. Those two…

“All right, I'm leaving soon. You're not going to believe the nightmare of a day I've had. I have so much to—”

I was interrupted by the clearing of a throat behind me.

Oh crap.

I turned and saw him standing by my desk, arms folded as usual, the most pissed-off expression on his face.

My heart was racing, my cheeks scorching.

“Er, I have to go, see you soon.”

I hung up the phone before Ethan even had the chance to reply. I stood on shaky legs, not knowing what to say or do.

“Is—is everything okay, Mr Knight?”

He glared at me for a few seconds.

“I'm going to need you to work a late one tonight, Jamie. There's something that needs doing for Monday morning.

“But…I…”

“But you what? Have better things to do than save your brand-new job? Don't make the mistake of getting on my bad side twice in one day, Jamie. It won't end well for you.”

The prick! He's punishing me big time!

I had plans that I had no choice but to cancel now.

I really need this job and he knows it. I'm under his thumb.

“Okay, um, sure. I can stay.”

He handed me a small binder.

“Fifty copies. I'm sure you're okay with that. And make it snappy, I’ve got appointments for you to set up afterward.”

I mustered a smile, trying to show that I wasn't bothered by him, which of course I was.

I'm going to have to text the others and tell them I'm running late. Mason Knight can't keep me here that long.

Mason turned around and walked toward his office, calling over his shoulder.

“By the way—no personal phone calls during office hours. I hope I won't have to warn you again.”

Of course he made sure to say it loud enough for everyone in the office to hear.

Ooh, new girl is in trouble with the Big Bad Boss.

GIVE ME STRENGTH!!

An hour later I walked across the office with a stack of papers in my arms so high I had to peer around them to see where I was going.

I did notice Jen walking out of Mr Knight's office. She didn't look happy.

“Oh Jen, can you hold that door please?” I asked in desperation, feeling the weight of a thousand pages.

Instead of holding the door she glared at me and stormed towards the lift like a scorned woman.

What the hell is her problem?

I watched her step inside. The woman had had it in for me from the second I’d walked into the building. She wasn’t one to hide her feelings.

Juggling the stack of papers I knocked on Mr Knight’s door. I hoped to God I didn’t face his wrath again today.

“Come in!”

I was sure he knew I had a stack of files but decided not to get up and open the door to help me.

I fiddled with the handle until I eventually got it open and pushed it the rest of the way with my bum.

I turned around with a sweat on and walked towards him.

“I see you've learnt your lesson.” He leaned forward in his chair with a smirk. “I guess there's hope for you after all.”

“Well I'm not one to make the same mistake twice.” I set the files down in front of him on the dark wooden desk.”I made fifty-five copies just in case.”

It was taking all the willpower I had in me just to be nice to him.

His eyes scanned the stack of papers. “I thought it looked like a lot. Your bit arms must be tired after some hard work.”

Really??

Couldn't I report him for the way he's treating me?

That didn't work out for me with my last boss, though…

I took a booklet from the top and leaned forward slightly, placing it down in front of him.

“So this bit here, I did it in bold to draw more attention.”

“Well, you're certainly drawing my attention.”

Mr Knight’s smirk was still firmly in place.

“Did you mean to leave that button open?”

He pointed to my blouse with the pen he was holding.

I looked down and noticed my white blouse was gaping between buttons, putting my baby-blue bra was on show.

I mean, it wasn’t as if it was avoidable; I was right in front of him.

“Oh!” I straightened up and fixed the gap.

“Did you do that…for my benefit?”

He sat back in his chair, his eyes scanning my body.

“They're just breasts. I've seen plenty of them. I am a man!”

I'm sure he has, of all shapes and sizes. The last pair he saw were Jen's, and he looked like he was getting a right handful.

I folded my arms over my chest. “Do you need anything else from me? Or is it okay that I leave?”

Please tell me I can leave. I beg of you.

“I don't need you for anything else. Consider this the end of your punishment. Now you know not to cross me again.”

Don't rise to him, Jamie.

“Point taken. See you Monday morning, then.”

I strode out, grabbed my things from behind my desk, and left in a hurry, before he could change his mind.

***

“I'm so sorry I'm late, forgive me!” I pleaded as I slid into the booth beside Carmen, who sipped Jack & Coke through a straw.

Ethan moved a wine glass across the table towards me.

“Been nearly two hours, what kept you so long?”

“Mason Knight had me do some photocopying all because I caught him banging Jen from finance in his office.”

I picked up the wine glass, taking a well-deserved drink after a long, hard, draining day.

“That lucky bitch,” murmured Carmen. “What’s she got that I haven’t?”

“Huge tits,” I replied. “But trust me, you don't want that man. He’s a prick with zero respect for anyone.”

“Oh, I don't need him to respect me, I just need him to pleasure me. I want to see what he’s like without a stitch of clothing on.”

She winked at me.

“Maybe you can bring me to that Christmas party?”

“I'm not allowed to, it's just staff.”

I set the glass back down on the table.

“I don't think I'm going to go anyway, not even for the drinks and buffet.”

Office Christmas parties were not my thing.

“You have to go, Jamie,” Ethan protested. “You can't miss a party at Knight & Son. I hear there's going to be strippers on poles and wads of cash given to everyone who shows.”

I rolled my eyes. “I'll think about it and decide next week.”

I wasn't interested, but I knew I needed to make more of an effort to get to know the people I worked with.

Besides the fact that I want to stay on Harry's good side.

And Mason’s.
