Sadness.

That’s all I feel.

Emptiness. Cold. Hurt.

I never thought that I would lose my mother so quickly in my life. My mother was my role model, she was the person I wanted to be when I get older. And now she is gone forever.

My father and I are so heartbroken. She was the light in our family and now it feels as if the light has gone out.

Staring at my mothers grave a month after her passing still hurts me.

My father is still closed off from everyone and everything. And I can only imagine the pain he is going through. He was married to my mother for 20 years.

I come to my mother’s grave every weekend just to say hey and bring some flowers. But my father does visit every two days to be close to her.

I just hope he will find someone one day that will love him as he deserves.

The few raindrops that fell on my face broke me out of my thoughts. I should go before the rain gets heavier.

“I love you mom, no matter what.” I put the flowers down and get up to go back to my almost empty apartment.

“Taxi” I yelled.

The Taxi drove up to me on the side of the road and splashed me with water from the drain.

Great I thought, that’s just what I needed. Getting in the cab and telling the driver the address to my apartment I thought how much I am going to miss this place.

But no matter where I am, I will always be a New York girl.

Paying the driver and tipping him, I got out of the car and went into my building.

I work as an Interior designer, so I get to live in a more expensive building with tight security.

Getting into my apartment I saw that all that was left was my mattress and a few groceries in the kitchen. My bags were already packed for me to leave tomorrow.

I would miss New York. My life was here, my friends, my family, and my job. But I think it is time to finally leave.

I already spoke with my father about me leaving and he is happy for me. But he did threaten me that if I do not call a few times a month he will get on a plane and come see me.

I got ready for bed and opened a bottle of wine to drink with my book. I am a little scared to move across the globe but if I don’t go now will I ever leave?

Okay, I need to stop thinking negatively and go to bed.

I do have an important day tomorrow.

Arriving in London after more than eight hours on a plane was xxxx.

My back hurt, I had high pressure in my ears, and I still haven’t arrived at my new apartment.

One of the perks of moving to London was that the company I worked at from now on, is that they gave me a new, modern apartment.

From the received pictures that I got, I saw that the building was new and modern with at least 10 stories. Every floor had just one apartment and it was huge.

Back in New York, I had also an apartment, but it was not as big and grand as this one was.

I got my luggage and went outside to wait for a cab. The cab arrived shortly, and we were off to my new apartment. I was already enthusiastic to see the apartment.

My old things were already there because I shipped them a few days before leaving.

The cab pulled up to a modern and sleek building and said, “We are here, that will be eighteen pounds,” and smiled.

I smiled back and paid.

He got out of the car and started getting my luggage out from the trunk. Getting out of the car and making my way up the stairs in the building made me think, could I be happy here?

“Here you go, Miss,” the cab driver said and put my luggage next to me.

“Thank you so much, have a lovely day” I smiled back at him and got my bags. Stepping into the building made me gasp.

The lobby was modern, and the floors were covered in black marble. The lobby was surrounded with big, wide windows that allowed the natural light in.

The doorman came and greeted me.

“Good evening, Miss Carlene I presume?”

“Yes, I am Katherine Carlone, how are you?”

The doorman who wore a work badge that said “Williams” smiled and said “I am very well thank you.

“Everything you have sent was brought up to your apartment and your assistant Arabella Brown has set everything up. Let me take your bags and I can show you to your new apartment.

“If you follow me, please.”

“Of course,” I followed the nice doorman up to the lift and we got in.

The moment the doors of my new apartment have opened a gasp left my mouth. The doorman smiled and put my bags on the floor and gave me my key and security codes.

“I will leave you now to yourself, have a lovely evening.” And he left, closing the door behind him.

Still standing in my previous spot and gaping at the modern and beautiful apartment I snapped myself out of it and went in to see everything.

When you stepped in you first saw the living room and dining room which were in an opened space.

Then an elegant kitchen that I will love to cook in and then you came in the master bedroom with a large master bathroom. And the biggest closed you could ever imagine.

Then, moving on, there was a second bedroom with an attached bathroom. And lastly, let’s not forget the view from the living room. It was breathtaking.

The apartment oversaw the River Thames.

All the boxes I have sent were unpacked and neatly placed all over the apartment giving it a modern, but homey vibe.

Opening the fridge, I saw that it was full of all the goodies to eat. And the cupboard was also full of food. So, what I do meet my new assistant I certainly have to thank her.

Arriving in London on Friday meant I had the weekend to settle in.

I spent the entire weekend at home redecorating and reorganizing. And let’s not forget getting ready for the first day of my new job.

It is currently Monday, and I just finished getting ready to leave. I wore a tight black skirt that came just to my knees. And a Bordeaux red blouse with the top two buttons undone.

My long light brown hair was let down in voluminous curls. Wearing black Luis Vuitton heels and a matching bag with red lipstick made me feel confident to conquer all.

I wore a black coat on top of it all and left for work.

I was expected at work at eight am, so I left at seven-thirty, so I still have time to find the building.

I was five minutes late. I was never late, how could I have let this to happen?

xxxx it. I ran like a madwoman and when I saw the building I ran to the reception.

“Hello, my name is Katherine Carlone. I am supposed to start work today.” The receptionist was a young woman in her mid-thirties.

She had dark red shoulder-length hair and wore a long black dress with black heels. Simple but stunning. Her name tag said “Emilia Smith.”

“Oh yes, Miss Carlone, you are five minutes late but don’t worry the director is very nice”, she smiled and said that I should take the lift on the left to the 7th story. I thanked her and hurried into the lift.

A man was already standing in the lift and as the doors were closing, he put his hand in between them to stop them from closing, allowing me to get in.

“Thank you” I said to the man in the lift and smiled at him.

“No problem, your new here?” he asked.

“Yes, I start today.”

“Well, you will be great at it.”

“How do you know? Maybe I suck at my job.” I joked.

He smirked and replied. “Well, all the people who work here are more than capable of their job, so I think you will not be an exception.” He laughed.

“Oh. “I laughed.

“So, what is your name if I may ask?” he turned to me and waited.

“Katherine Carlone, and you are?”

“Alexander James, but people call me Alex.”

“Well nice to meet you, Alex James” I replied.

The lift came to a stop on the 6th floor and Alex turned to me and said, “Well I do hope to see you around beautiful.” He winked at me and left. I couldn’t stop smiling.

I could feel the blush rising to my cheeks.

The lift finally arrived on the 7th floor, and I stepped out. A young woman was waiting for me. “Hello, I am Arabella Brown, and I am your assistant.” She smiled and held her hand out for me to shake.

I gave her my hand, laughed and said: “Hello, I did not know I will be getting an assistant.”

She shook my hand and turned around “Follow me so I can show you your office.”

I followed her and she led me into a big and spacious office with a view over the entire city. I loved it.

“You are the newest edition to our company, so of course you get an assistant. The boss will be ready for you in an hour, so you still have time to get settled in.

“And what do you say if we go to lunch together?”

Still looking out the window I did not turn around.

“Sure, I would love to go to lunch with you. I think we will be great friends. And where do I have to go to meet the boss?”

“Mr. Adams office is on the top floor. And his office is the only one on that floor. I should get back to work. Excuse me.” She replied and left.

Leaving me in my new office.
