Chapter 1

SKYLER

On my hands and knees, I scrubbed the floors of the largest manor on the estate.

We had a mysterious guest arriving soon.

Their identity was top secret.

No one would tell me who. All I knew was that they were important and that it was imperative that their guest house was in perfect condition.

My hands were calloused and blistered. As were my knees. I touched one of my sores and flinched.

Being a human slave among werewolves is not a life I would wish upon my worst enemy.

From the day I was born, my status in werewolf society was to be nothing more than a servant. It was inevitable. And humans were treated poorly while the werewolves reigned over us.

Besides, a mere human wouldn’t stand a chance rebelling against a typical werewolf.

I worked as a domestic slave under the Blood Moon pack on one of their estates far away from the actual Blood Moon. It was the largest and most powerful pack among five.

At each estate there were headmasters who worked for the alpha. Since the estates were scattered over the country, they needed someone to run them efficiently, hence the need for a headmaster, and a werewolf at that.

And this was what it was like for the other five werewolf territories.

The alpha of the pack that I worked in was the deadliest…

Word of his ruthlessness spread through the servants’ quarters, whispers of his cruelty passed along as a cautionary tale.

Luckily, it had been years since he last visited our estate on the outskirts of the Blood Moon pack.

Apparently, he was like a ticking bomb ready to explode, a bloodthirsty monster.

People say he was blessed by the gods for making him insurmountable and indestructible, and that even other alphas feared him, but that blessing also came with a curse. And the very thought of him made chills run down my spine, anyone’s spine.

He protected the pack from rogue wolves because they wouldn’t dare step foot inside his pack, but that didn’t mean life was any easier for us humans. While we were ensured safety from rogue wolves, we weren’t promised our freedom.

From what I picked up from the hushed whispers, the alpha was a cursed being, causing him to be more wolf than man, and also to be mateless.

This meant that he would never have his other half, and seeing other wolves happy with their mates must have taken a toll on his perspective and made him this ruthless by confining himself to darkness, only coming out when a matter of importance arose.

And that’s when he comes out to kill. He was an unforgiving soul that relished in his opponents’ blood and scattered their flesh like the wind carrying ashes. And for that everyone feared him—

“Skyler!”

I squealed upon hearing my name being called but then an arm masterfully covered up my mouth, blocking off the sound. I finally looked up and breathed a sigh of relief when I saw who it was.

“Scarlette…don’t scare me like that!” I whined while dramatically grabbing on to the left side of my chest.

Scarlette was a mother figure to me. When my parents died and I was brought to the estate to work, she was the one who took me under her wing and cared for me.

I don’t really know the details of my parents’ deaths, but I know for sure they died in a rogue attack.

“I came here to tell you something, even though I don’t think you’re ready to hear this,” she said skeptically as she looked me in the eyes. “But it’s a secret and you have to promise not to tell a single soul.”

“Cross my heart and hope to die.” I dropped my rag to the floor, sit up, and crossed my heart.

Scarlette rolled her eyes. “I’m being serious. No one can know what I’m about to tell you.”

“Yes,” I said. “I promise you won’t hear a peep out of me about this.”

Her eyes lit up before she started speaking.

“So, I was just serving the headmaster tea,” she explained, “when I overheard the juiciest piece of information.”

She paused dramatically, wanting me to beg for the details.

“Go on,” I urged her. “Tell me.”

“Our mystery guest is the Alpha himself,” she revealed. “Alpha Ares.”

I shuddered just at the sound of his name. It rang in my head menacingly.

I had fooled myself into thinking that this day would never come. That I might spend a whole lifetime without ever crossing paths with the devil.

Clearly I was wrong…

Now that I knew he was coming, however, he seemed infinitely more sinister.

I hated to admit that I was afraid, but it was undeniable.

Before I knew it the alpha would be sleeping in the very room we stood in.

He would be laying his body in the bed I had made up a few moments ago.

The room felt like it was spinning.

“W–when is he arriving?” I stuttered.

Scarlette looked at me, concerned.

Judging by the look on her face, I knew what came next wouldn’t be good. At least not for me and the other slaves.

“Tomorrow.”
