“Stop, you son of a bitch!”

Read the full Uncensored version on Galatea!

Rain pelts against my face as my ears fill with the sound of my black boots pounding against the wet asphalt that’s reflecting the neon lights of surrounding businesses.

The black jeans and black hoodie that I’m wearing are being soaked through and weighed down from the rain.

I weave my 5′4 body through a crowd of men and scantily clad women waiting to enter an exclusive club, many holding umbrellas and a few unsuccessfully using their clutches or jackets to shield themselves from the rain.

A few of them glare at me as I bump into them in my haste.

I look back to see the six-foot-tall, bald, angry man who’s chasing me struggling to get through the crowd due to his larger frame.

He’s constantly shoulder checking people who slow him down with their rage-filled out lashes. While he’s momentarily distracted by an angry man, I turn into an alleyway blocked by the crowd.

I run and duck behind a dumpster, waiting for him to run past the entrance, and soon enough, he does.

I stand up and walk further down the alley, pulling out my newly acquired wallet. Going through – John Lee’s wallet according to his driver’s license – I find $135. Not bad.

Most people don’t carry around cash, just plastic, so this is a score. Pocketing the money, I get rid of the wallet in another dumpster I pass.

I pull my hood down and adjust my short-haired, black wig back into place. Thankfully, I use waterproof makeup to contour my face to appear masculine.

It would suck if my face started melting and he saw my real appearance.

Most of my targets don’t realize they have had their wallets stolen until after the fact when I’m long gone. Today I screwed up. I made a rookie mistake and dropped the wallet right after lifting it.

I decided to grab it off the ground and run while John was still shocked that I would steal it.

After doing this for seven years out of the twenty-two that I have been alive, it’s pretty easy to spot the signs that someone is going to give chase.

He already realized I was pickpocketing him and had that look where he was pissed enough to chase me, so why not be chased with the winnings rather than without?

This way if I get away, then I have the money and he has a false description to give to the police.

If I get caught… well I’d be fucked whether I had the wallet or not because he witnessed me lift it, and I highly doubt he would have believed me if I said he had dropped it.

It was in a pretty deep pocket.

I turn right into another alleyway so I’m going in the opposite direction from John. This alley is behind the exclusive club, I think it said Chaos on the sign in front.

I heard that it’s a club for the super-rich. Apparently, three brothers own it, triplets.

I heard they’re rumoured to be cold-blooded, ruthless, and don’t care about anything but power, and they already are the most powerful people in Canada, in all of North America even, maybe even the world.

They prioritize those with money and power, but that’s nothing new in society. Most of the people in line out front won’t even get in.

They don’t meet the qualifications of the elite and are just wasting their night out in the cold rain hoping for an opportunity.

When I enter the alley behind Chaos I see five men standing in the middle of the alley by the club’s backdoor.

If I was dressed as a girl I would have turned around to not risk running into drunk creeps, but I was dressed in my male disguise.

Dressing as Leo Dharan gives me a sense of security, I get left alone because I’m a guy and the creeps lurking around in the dark are looking to prey upon young, defenceless, girls.

There was a gay guy who bothered me once believing that because I’m smaller it would be easier to overpower me. Jokes on him, I had a switchblade. I whipped it out and that made him back off.

I use my male disguise when I go about my thieving ways or the occasional times when I get hired to do a job, which is usually to steal a specific something for someone.

It makes it easier to escape from those who would seek me out to get revenge and the cops. While they’re looking for a guy, I’ve already changed and walked right past them as a girl.

Of the five men in the alley, three with black hair are standing with their backs to me while the other two appear to be kneeling in front of them, begging.

I slowly and quietly continue forward, hoping to slip by unnoticed.

As I get closer, I can see them visibly trembling and the desperation on their faces because they are facing me. I can see the light from above the door reflect on the tears that stain their faces.

I stop moving and stand still, I do not want to get closer to whatever they’re dealing with. It looks serious considering two grown men are begging, crying and trembling. I think one of them might have even pissed himself.

I decide to hang back and wait for them to finish and leave so I can pass.

“P-p-please M-Master, s-spare m-me. I-it wasn’t m-my fault. Harry w-was the one w-who didn’t c-check,” the one kneeling on the left says, while, I’m guessing Harry, harshly shakes his head, eyes wide.

“N-no, I d-didn’t see t-them enter,” Harry replies, panicking.

“Well that’s a shame, here I thought I had capable staff handling my business,” the tallest of the three black-haired men who all looked above six feet, says with a sigh. His voice sounds so deep and husky, a shiver of pleasure goes up my spine.

“I agree Alec, who knew we had fucktards doing such an important job. They fucking just let them walk in and start shit, ruining our meeting. You pieces of shit couldn’t even do the simple job of fucking looking at a card and going, yup that’s a VIP card or nope you can’t enter. Because of your stupid nonexistent brains, you fucked up our plans!” the man standing to the right yells, his voice sending another shiver of pleasure through me.

He seems to be just a few inches shorter than the one called Alec but appears to be the most muscular of the three.

“Jace, stop yelling. You’ll draw unwanted attention,” the third one, who’s the shortest by an inch or two reprimands in a stern annoyed voice. This time I suppress the shiver that wants to be triggered by his voice.

“They will still surrender, they’d be stupid to say no when they know we’re just asking to save ourselves the trouble of having to kill them all. They just got scared by the damn mutts these two idiots let slip through,” he says facing the one called Jace.

“Luca’s right, they know they’re as good as dead if they refuse to surrender,” Alec says, talking to Jace. His reply seems to cause the two kneeling men to relax slightly. “But either way you two are done. You failed to do your job and could have jeopardized our business.”

Alec moves before the two men can even process what he said. He grabs Harry’s head and twists it, snapping his neck. Before his dead body hits the ground, he also snaps the other man’s neck.

They both fall to the ground unmoving, dead. A terrified gasp leaves my mouth before I can stop myself.

All three of the men snap their heads towards me. As terrified as I am, I couldn’t help but admire how gorgeous they are. One look at them and it’s clear that they are related.

They all closely resemble each other, but look different and can clearly be distinguished. Their eyes, hair, and facial expressions being the most noticeable differences.

Alec has blue eyes and looks pissed off. His hair is shorter on the sides and longer on the top, it’s styled back and has a sleek and powerful look to it.

Jace’s eyes are green and he looks a bit shocked. His hair is also shorter on the sides and longer on top, but unlike Alec’s sleek and styled look, his is messy, carefree, and slightly curly.

Luca, with grey eyes that are behind black-framed glasses has an apathetic expression on his face. His hair is longer than the others and put up in a man bun.

“I w-won’t mention a word of what I saw,” I stutter in my intentionally deepened voice, while slowly trying to walk backwards in retreat. If I can get away from this alive, I will never enter this area dressed as Leo, maybe not even in general.

Alec slowly stalks towards me, while Jace and Luca trail slightly behind him. When they get closer to me they all suddenly stiffen. I see them slightly raise their noses and visibly sniff the air.

Whatever they smelled in the night makes their eyes turn black… I rapidly blink a few times to correct my vision.

Nope. Still black. Maybe I’m having stress-induced hallucinations.

All three of their faces have shock and disbelief flash across them before they let out a low growl…

Growl?

“No. Fucking. Way!” yells Jace, grabbing his head. “I am not gay! The only dick I like is my big ass dick, especially when it’s buried deep inside a tight, wet vagina!”

“There must be some mistake, our mate can’t be a guy. Nope. I do not swing that way. Maybe he was around our actual mate and had her scent rub off on him,” Alec says, turning towards the other two while running his hand through his black locks.

“There’s no mistake. I know none of us are gay, we would have known if we were by now, but the scent is too strong for it to have just been rubbed off on him. Plus, when I looked into his eyes, I felt the pull, and I bet you guys did too. He is our mate,” Luca says while rubbing his hand over his face, causing Jace to let out a cry of disbelief.

While they are busy discussing whatever the hell they are, I turn and run as quickly and as quietly as possible from the alley.

“Maybe the goddess mistook the tiny guy for a girl when assigning…,” is the last thing I hear Jace say to the others before I pick up my pace and start running, all of them too engrossed in their discussion, to notice my silent escape.

When I get to the main street, I run towards a cab that’s pulling up to grab two drunk girls sitting on the curb.

I run to it and get in before they can properly balance one another and stand straight.

I tell the driver to quickly take me towards the other side of the city in a panicked rush, not wanting to risk them discovering I’ve disappeared until I truly have.

Once I get near my place I give the driver the cab fare and get out. My home is in an abandoned industrial building.

I came across it a few years ago when I had to hide while running from some guys who caught me stealing from them.

I explored it and found that the top floor would make a great place to stay after adding a few necessary things, plus I wouldn’t have to spend the majority of my income on rent.

I have a gas space heater to keep me warm, and a portable gas stove to cook some warm food. I don’t like to cook and I’m not very good at it either, so it’s mostly used to cook ramen noodles.

I plop myself down on my mattress that’s on the floor towards the wall lined with windows.

I contemplate whether I should call the cops and inform them that a double homicide was just committed, or not.

I know that I’m a criminal too and that there’s probably some criminal code or something where you don’t snitch on fellow criminals, but I’m a thief. What I saw was murder.

That’s a whole other level of shit.

After thinking about it some more, I realize that they seemed pretty experienced with killing people. That Alec guy killed them so fast with no hesitation or worry.

They’ve probably done it multiple times before. They probably already got rid of the bodies at this point and cleaned up any evidence that might point towards them.

Plus, if I snitch on them, they seem like the kind of people that would put me on their hit list. I do not want to be on their hit list.

After contemplating for a while, I decided to pretend that tonight didn’t happen. Telling the police won’t bring the two dead guys back.

However, it will further agitate those three murders and give them the motive to come after me, well add to their current motive. My sense of self-perseverance is outweighing my sense of justice.

Yes, I do have some semblances of a sense of justice despite being a thief.

Trying to clear my mind, I get up and get ready for bed. I’m exhausted, physically, and mentally. It’s been a long night.

Chapter 1

“Hey Becca! Open your eyes, sleepyhead! We’re almost to our hotel.”

I woke up startled. Ugh, my neck hurt. How did I manage to fall asleep during a thirty-minute ride? I turned my head and looked at my best friend, Kate.

She practically jumped with excitement, sitting behind the steering wheel of my Prius.

“Why are you yelling?”

“Are you kidding me?! Tomorrow you and I will be settling into our dorm, and tonight we are going to our first college party at the infamous Kappa Alpha fraternity! I don’t even know which I am more excited about!”

“Let me guess? I bet it’s the partaaay!” I laughed because she noticed my sarcastic tone of voice and frowned.

“You’re no fun!”

“Sorry, Kate, I promise to behave.”

“I honestly can’t believe that our parents let us leave for college before tomorrow’s move-in day. I thought we would be coming here with them in tow, but I guess the fact that we’re both 18 and never got into any trouble, they let it slide! I’m glad they don’t know our secrets!”

She winked at me, and I laughed.

“So, tonight is the party, and it will probably be my first one-night stand at college. Tomorrow, we will meet our parents and get settled into our dormitory!”

“Do we need to go to the party? Maybe we could just take a walk around town and find our way to the dormitory?”

“Rebecca Dawson, you’re starting to piss me off! We had a deal! You promised me you would go with me to this fucking party, and you will go with me. Even if I have to drag you there!”

“Okay, Kitty Kate, I give up. No need for violence!”

“Good girl, you know I love you. Besides, why do you need to walk around town? Home is only thirty minutes away. We have been here hundreds of times, and it’s a small town, nothing like the Big Apple, where you can be lost within a few minutes!”

“You have a solid point, girl. How long until we get to our hotel? I need to use the bathroom badly.

“First you fell asleep, now you want to pee… Where is my best friend and what did you do to her, old lady?”

“Shut up, Kate!” I smacked her thigh lightly, and she laughed.

“Well, thanks to my driving skills, we’re here! Go check us in, and I will park your car.”

I groaned but followed her orders. Kate caught up with me as I strolled to our room.

I took my time using the bathroom and then walked back into the room, to find Kate already in her lacy red underwear and staring at two dresses on the bed.

“You should go with the strapless pink dress. You look sexy in it.” I plopped myself down on my bed and looked at my friend. Her nose wrinkled with concern.

“Do you really think so?”

“Yeah, but you will need to choose a strapless bra.”

“Consider it done.”

Kate laughed, unclasped her straps from the bra, and put on the pink dress I suggested. She looked stunning and unbelievably sexy.

Red curls enveloped her baby doll face, with her full lips and light green eyes. She already had makeup on and it only made her look more beautiful and more mature. But I guess that was her intention. We will be freshmen at the party, and she didn’t want that fact to stand out to everyone.

“You look perfect, Kate. That dress hugs all your curves in all the right places, and your cleavage… God, I almost pity the boys at the party!”

Kate spun in front of the mirror, looking at herself from all sides. She winked at her reflection and turned to me.

“Yeah, I am dressed to impress and seduce one of the fraternity guys tonight! Are you sure that my round ass looks good in it?” She threw me a questioning look, and I nodded with a smile, which she returned.

“Becca, I can’t believe that in three days we will start college! It’s like my dream come true! I am going to study with my best friend in the whole world, and we both are finally single!”

She shut up almost immediately and looked at me for my reaction. I shrugged my shoulders; I didn’t want to think about my newly single life tonight.

Kate noticed my movement and said, trying to ease the atmosphere.

“The most important question now, is what are you planning to wear tonight?”

I shrugged my shoulders again because truth be told, I didn’t care.

I didn’t want to go to this party, and I would have been perfectly fine arriving here with my parents tomorrow. But Kate made me come, she drove us here and even chose this hotel for the night. I sighed.

“I brought only one dress with me. This.”

I dug in my travel bag and dragged out a white summer dress. It was a scalloped lace A-silhouette dress with ¾ sleeves, and it served as a contrast to my tanned skin.

I changed into it without hesitation and without waiting for Kate’s approval. I knew she wanted us to be sexy tonight, but I was going to look lovely. I put on blue flats and let my brown hair down, tossing it a little. As my hair often was braided, it was a little curled at the ends now, just as I loved it.

“Please, tell me that at least you will let me do your makeup?”

“No, I am good,” I answered.

I applied colorless lip gloss to moisten my lips and added green push-up mascara to my eyelashes.

Kate and I were both green-eyed, but my eyes were a darker green color. My mom had always told me that my eyes were almost emerald green.

When she saw me for the first time, she thought that my name should be Dorothy. Thanks to my grandmother, she didn’t let her do that. I loved my name, my full name actually—Rebecca—but as most of my friends called me Becca, I got used to that.

“Well, I must say. You look stunning, even in this boring dress.”

I pouted my lips at Kate, and she laughed.

“It’s a lovely dress, but I was hoping for something sexier, you know. But I guess, as long as this dress highlights your slim waist, big boobs and long legs—I’m okay with it. Even if your round hips and tight ass will stay hidden from everyone.”

“We always have your ass and hips on display, right?” I winked at her and walked to the door. “Do you even know where this party is?”

“You forgot that I had a spring-fling with a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity last year? Of course, I know,” Kate answered and walked next to me.

She put her hand on my hip. “Ready?”

“Always.” I smiled, and we exited our room.

Chapter 2

Kate and I walked down the street, and as we neared the college campus, I heard the sounds of the party. Loud music could be perfectly heard, even from a distance.

“So, what’s our plan for tonight? Are we mingling or just having fun?”

“How about both? I think most of the older students already arrived… I hope to meet some guys from the football team. If we are lucky, Jones will be here. He’s gorgeous and hot! Even one look at him makes me wet, and I am sure I am not the only one!”

“Who is Jones?” I arched my eyebrow at her with a question in my eyes.

“Becca, I can’t believe it! Your ignorance is amazing!” Kate laughed and rolled her eyes at me. “Jones is the star of our college’s football team, and he’s the best quarterback the team has had in several years! I heard that after graduation, he could even be drafted to the NFL.”

I flinched after I heard the word “quarterback.”

The memories of Adam flooded my mind. He was my boyfriend for two years and also was the quarterback on our high school football team.

He was my first serious boyfriend; I gave him all of myself and I was sure that he was the one for me. How stupid was I? Very.

He started cheating on me a short time after I lost my virginity to him. Our relationship ended with my heart being broken when he dumped me one month before graduation. He told me that I just couldn’t satisfy him in bed, no matter how hard I tried.

So he just chose what was best for him and dumped me for one of the meanest girls in our class. They had been fucking behind my back for several months before Adam finally decided to be honest with me. How generous of him! Fucking asshole!

“Becca, are you still sulking because of dickhead Adam Farrell?”

“No, Kate. Honestly. You remember that everyone expected me to have a public breakdown, but I held my head high and didn’t show any of them how painful his betrayal was for me. That helped me to overcome my pain.

“It’s just strange. He was a big part of my life for two years, and I loved him. I thought that we were fine and our sex life was perfect… I was wrong about both.

“Now I think that maybe I am frigid or not sexy enough… Ugh, I don’t know! Every time I hear the word… My mind is blank, and ‘I am not sexy enough’ flashes in my head like a neon light.”

“Don’t you see yourself in the mirror? You’re stunning with your big emerald eyes! You have a perfect, curvaceous body. Your body is like a guitar! I even envy your boobs and long legs! And ass!” She linked our arms and tugged me closer to her.

“I am beautiful. I know that. But what if I am not good in bed? What if Adam was right, and I can’t satisfy any men?”

“Adam is a jerk, and he didn’t deserve a precious girlfriend like you! Believe me, Becca, I have a feeling that you will find your perfect guy here. I don’t know why, but you know my intuition. It’s always right!”

“Here is hoping.” I hugged my best friend and smiled at her. “So, I guess you want to get laid tonight? Maybe I could talk you out of it? Just drinking and dancing?”

“Nah. I have been waiting for this party for too long. Becca, I know that there is no sex for you tonight, but at least, promise me you’ll try to have fun?”

“Will do, Kitty Kate, will do.” I laughed at her pouting lips as she marched us to the front door of the fraternity house, which was wide open. People were everywhere; they laughed and drank from their red cups.

Kate and I had been at the party for almost forty minutes and we already caught the attention of two guys.

I wasn’t interested in either of them, but Kate found one of them attractive, so I shut my mouth and tried to be nice. One of them was Liam, and another was Caiden, but I wasn’t sure who was who.

As I said, I wasn’t interested. Kate dragged me to dance a little, and the guys followed us to the dance floor. Soon enough, Kate was locking lips with her admirer.

I saw the other guy looking in my direction with a suggestive smirk , and I decided to go to find the bathroom.

After I wandered a little through the house, I finally found it. Thank goodness, it was empty. When I was on my way back to the living room, where Kate was, I saw a room off to the right.

The door was open, and the lights were dimmed. I heard laughter. I was curious, so I walked into the room and stopped, leaning my side on the doorframe.

There were people all around, but what caught my attention was a group resting on two couches in the middle of the room.

They were playing cards, they were drinking, and they didn’t give a damn about the people around them, who were watching them play.

I don’t know what made me stay here, maybe the atmosphere of the room or the guys playing cards. I stood with a red cup in my hand, taking each of the guys on the couch in my view.

They were athletes, probably football players; they all looked muscular and huge. They were popular and loved by girls. I could tell just observing them.

Some of the girls were sitting on the laps of guys, some on the back of the sofa, a few girls lingered near the walls.

As I kept looking at everyone from the group, a guy with a short haircut, who was sitting with his back turned to me, shifted a little, and my eyes landed on the most gorgeous guy I had ever seen.

I ran through a forest, panting, trying to escape the carnal phantoms around me, which seemed to be summoning me. Saying, join us…

But the deeper into the woods I ran, the darker and more alive the forest became.

Some trees swayed like lovers. Others, with gnarled roots and spindly branches, looked like predators. Closing in on me. Chasing after me.

Something out there in the dark was chasing me. Something inhuman.

And now the mouths weren’t moaning. They were screaming.

Grotesque orgies everywhere turning violent. Bloody. Life-threatening.

Any second now, the darkness was going to catch me.

The sex was going to strangle me.

As I felt a root snake its way around my leg, I tripped and fell down a gaping hole at the center of the forest. But it wasn’t a hole.

It was a mouth. With sharp teeth and a black tongue, licking its lips, about to swallow me whole.

I tried to scream but I had no voice.

I fell.

Farther.

Deeper.

Until I was one with the violent, sexual madness…completely consumed.

I blinked. What the hell was I drawing?

Sitting by the riverbank, sketchbook in hand, I looked down, disbelieving, at my own work. I had drawn a most disturbing…and sexual vision.

That could mean only one thing: the Haze was coming.

But before I gave the haze or my drawing another thought, the sound of nearby giggling distracted me. I turned to see a group of girls, surrounding him.

Aiden Norwood.

I’d never seen him here before. Not at the riverbank where I go to draw and clear my mind. You don’t find a lot of our kind hanging out around here.

Why? I don’t know.

Maybe it’s the calm when we’re always expected to be wild. Maybe it’s the water when every one of us burns with a fire within. Or maybe it’s just a spot I’ve only ever thought of as my own.

A secret place where I’m not one of the pack. Where I’m just me, Sienna Mercer, a nineteen-year-old red-headed self-taught artist. A seemingly normal girl.

The Alpha walked toward the water, ignoring the gaggle of girls following him. He looked like he wanted to be left alone. It made me curious. It made me want to draw him.

Sure, I knew it was a risk to draw the Alpha. But how could I resist?

I began to outline him. Towering at six feet five, with disheveled jet black hair and golden-green eyes that seemed to change color every time he turned his head, Aiden was the definition of mouth-watering.

I was just beginning to work on those eyes when he turned his head and sniffed.

I froze, mid-pen stroke. If he were to see me now, if he were to see what I was drawing…

But then, to my relief, he looked back out at the water, becoming lost again in some dark reverie. Even surrounded by others, the Alpha looked alone. So I drew him alone.

I’d always watched him from afar. I’d never been this close. But now I could see how his biceps bulged from his shirt, how his spine curved to accommodate his transformation.

How quickly he could shift, I imagined. Bent over, eyes searching like a feral animal’s, he seemed, in this instance, already halfway there.

A man, yes. But even more so, a werewolf.

His beauty reminded me that the Haze was fast approaching. It was the time of year when every werewolf from the age of sixteen and older goes mad with lust, the season where everyone—and I mean everyonefucks like crazy.

Once or twice a year, this unpredictable hunger, this physical need would infect all of us in the pack.

Those who didn’t have mates found a temporary partner instead and fooled around to their heart’s content.

In other words, there was no one in the Pack older than sixteen who was a virgin.

Looking at Aiden now, I wondered if the rumors swirling around him were true.

If that was one of the reasons he was here, ignoring the girls, brooding by the riverbank.

Some said it’d been months since Aiden had taken any women to bed, that he was distancing himself from everyone.

Why? A secret mate? No, the Pack gossips would’ve sniffed her out by now.

Then what was it? What was to come of our beloved Alpha if he had no partner when the Haze struck?

It’s none of your business, I chided myself. What did it matter to me who Aiden screwed?

He was ten years older, and like most werewolves, only interested in someone his own age.

To Aiden Norwood, the Alpha of the second largest pack in the United States, I didn’t exist. Putting aside my school-girl crush, I knew I was better off that way.

Michelle, my best friend, was dead-set on finding me a fuck-buddy. She’d already paired up in advance, as was common among unmated wolves before the Haze.

Trying to set me up with three of her brother’s friends, all who seemed perfectly decent and who’d been blunt that they thought me fit for a good time in the sack, Michelle couldn’t understand why I’d turned each of them down.

“Ugh.” I could almost hear Michelle’s voice reverberating in my head.

“Why are you always so damn picky, girl?”

Because the truth was, I had a secret.

At the age of nineteen, I was the only virgin she-wolf in our whole pack. I’d been through three seasons, and no matter how sex-crazed I became, I had never given into my carnal desires.

I know. Very un-wolfy of me to care about “feelings” and “first times,” but I cherished mine.

It wasn’t that I was a prude. In our society, there was no such thing. But, unlike most girls, I refused to settle until I found my mate.

I was going to find him.

I was saving my virginity for him.

Whoever he might be.

I continued to sketch the Alpha when I looked up and saw, to my surprise and sudden dread, he wasn’t there.

“Not bad.” I heard a low voice beside me. “But the eyes could use a little work.”

I turned to see, standing right next to me, looking down at my sketch…

Aiden.

Fucking.

Norwood.

Before I could catch my breath, he looked up and our eyes met. I tensed, realizing I was making direct eye contact, and immediately looked away.

No one in their right mind dared to look the Alpha in the eyes.

It could only mean one of two things: You were challenging the Alpha’s dominance—AKA a death wish. Or, you were inviting the Alpha to sex.

Since I didn’t intend to do either, my only option was to look away before it was too late and pray he didn’t misinterpret the meaning of my glance.

“Forgive me,” I said quietly, just to be on the safe side. “You took me by surprise.”

“I apologize,” he said. “I didn’t mean to startle you.”

That voice. Even saying the most polite words imaginable, they sounded loaded with menace.

Like at any second, he might rip your throat out with his bare human-form teeth.

“It’s okay,” he said. “Really. I don’t bite…most of the time.”

I was so close I could reach out and touch his rippling muscles and golden skin. I lifted my eyes and chanced a look.

A brutal, jagged face that shouldn’t be handsome, but was. Thick eyebrows that looked coarse to the touch, like a hint of his werewolf form.

And a nose, even though slightly crooked—no doubt broken in some past scuffle—that couldn’t interfere with his so-sexy-it-hurts looks.

The Alpha took a step closer as if to test me. I could feel every hair on my body rise in trepidation. Or…was it temptation?

“Next time you draw me,” Aiden said, “come closer.”

“Oh…okay,” I sputtered like an idiot.

And then, just as quickly as he’d appeared, Aiden Norwood turned and took off, leaving me by the river, alone. I sighed, feeling every muscle in my body ease.

It wasn’t an everyday event to see the Alpha out of the Pack House, the headquarters for all pack business. Mostly, we saw the Alpha at gatherings or balls. Always something formal.

What had happened here today was rare.

I could already see, from the jealous looks of Aiden’s adoring fans who had followed him here, only to be ignored, that this could quickly spiral out of control.

Even a whiff of interaction with a female, especially a young commoner like myself, would be enough to send the horniest bitches into a frenzy, tearing down the Pack House’s walls just for a taste of him.

An event of that magnitude was sure to stress the Alpha out. And a stressed alpha meant a dysfunctional alpha, which meant a dysfunctional pack…you get the picture.

No one wanted that.

I decided, with the little light that was left of the day, I would finish drawing to clear my mind. Just me and the river in peace.

But all I could see were Aiden Norwood’s eyes.

And how very wrong I had drawn them. The Alpha was right. I could do better.

If I could just get…closer. But when would I ever be this close again?

I didn’t know then what I know now. That within a few hours the Haze was about to begin.

That I was about to become a sex-crazed beast. And that Aiden Norwood, the Alpha of the East Coast Pack, was going to play a very prominent role in my sexual awakening…

It was enough to make a girl howl.

Chapter 2 – The Haze

You don’t get to decide when and where the Haze hits you.

Driving? Better pull over fast or you’ll cause a fifty-car pileup.

At work? Punch the clock and run for the hills or you and your boss may become a lot more than colleagues.

As I sat down to dinner, I prayed it wouldn’t hit me while I was with my family—the worst possible place, in my mind.

As I helped set the table and served a plate of homemade lasagna to Selene, I eyed the back door, in case I had to make an impromptu escape.

I sat down to eat with the whole family, who were already in the middle of a lively conversation.

“What is it, Jeremy?” my mom said, nodding to my sister’s mate. “You’ve barely said a word since you walked in. How’s work?”

“You don’t have to answer that, counselor,” Selene said, shooting Mom an amused glare.

“Well”—Jeremy laughed—“if you’re asking for gossip about our leadership, Melissa, you know I can’t divulge that kind of information.”

“Not even a nod to confirm or deny?”

“Mom,” Selene said. “He’s the Pack’s head lawyer. His job is to keep their secrets.”

“But…” Mom sighed. “I don’t need to know anything of consequence. Just a little chatter. Like…is it true that our Alpha and Jocelyn are no longer an item and now she’s dating his beta, Josh?”

Mom,” Selene and I said in unison.

Jeremy grinned. “I plead the fifth.”

“Oh, you’re no fun, any of you.”

The woman acted more like a teenager than both of her daughters combined. But we loved her more for it. Most of the time.

“You could ask me about my work, you know,” Selene said.

“I did, didn’t I?” she asked through a mouthful of lasagna. “I’m sure I did.”

Selene rolled her eyes. Mom had always wanted Selene to pursue a more stable career. Fashion, my mother thought, wasn’t an occupation. It was a hobby.

“One day, something’s in, the next something’s out,” she would say. “That’s true with clothes and the whole industry, Selene! Think long-term.”

Well, now Selene had succeeded, proving years of mother’s advice wrong, and was actively working at one of the top fashion design firms in the city.

But Selene always let Mom’s insults roll right off her shoulders. On every level, she was the prettier, smarter, more successful version of me.

Whenever I said this out loud, which I did—often—Selene would shove me gently and just say, “You’re still young, Si. Give it time.”

But when it came to my dreams, to my future career as the world’s greatest artist, I’d never been patient. One day I was going to open my own gallery.

One day soon, I promised myself. I didn’t care what Mom said. Selene had proven that she wasn’t right about everything.

“That’s all right, Mom,” Selene said, changing the subject. “Gossip’s more interesting anyway. Speaking of which…”

Selene’s eyes flicked to me. I gave her a silent head shake. Don’t.

“Any idea who might be your partner for the season, Si?”

“Ooooh, yes,” Mom said, turning to me. “What, or should I say, who is on the menu this year?”

“A she-wolf never reveals her secrets,” I said, playing coy.

For a second, my family actually seemed like they would move on.

I had a way of doing that—steering conversations, taking control, keeping the attention on anyone but me. Although I was the youngest, I had always had that authoritative ability.

But my mother caught herself.

“There she goes again,” Mom said, shaking her head. “Our little dominant always making us submit to her whims. C’mon, Si. Tell us. Is there a boy?”

“Some of us like to keep our private lives private, Mom,” I said.

Mom shrugged. “There’s nothing to hide. I know your father is certainly looking forward to this year’s Haze, aren’t you, darling?”

“I’m counting the seconds,” Dad said, holding up his glass of wine, smiling mischievously.

“Guys. PLEASE. So gross.”

It was gross, sure. But that wasn’t the reason it bothered me so much. My mom had always been a sexually liberated creature. No, what I didn’t like was the lying.

When I said my virginity was my secret, I meant it. Not even my mom knew.

Which was weird because we had always been so open with each other about everything. She’d never kept the truth from me.

Not about how she met Dad, who was a human. Not about how the two of them had their one and only daughter, Selene. And certainly not about how they found me.

They’re not actually my biological parents.

I was discovered in an abandoned carriage outside the hospital where my mom worked. Not that it mattered, Mom had always said.

I was about to change the subject to anything, anything other than the Haze when it happened.

I froze. A slow, pulsing molten heat ignited within my core, making my body feel as if it were on fire.

Breathing became impossible, sweat covered every inch of my skin, and before I could resist, the seam of my jeans pressed tight into my groin.

I quivered with sudden, unbearable longing.

FUCK.

A harsh gasp left my mouth before I could stop it, and when I opened my eyes, which I couldn’t remember closing, I saw that everyone else in the dining room had the same reaction as me.

No, no, no.

Not here.

Not around family.

The way my sister stared at Jeremy. The way my mom rose out of her seat, leaning towards my dad.

I couldn’t bear it. I ran from the room as fast as my feet could take me.

The kitchen.

The hallway.

The front door.

And out into the cool night where I collapsed upon my knees.

The Haze crawled through my body like a venomous snake. My nipples hardened and my stomach shuddered, tightening with sexual need.

My throat was clogged and I fought to breathe. Even in the windy night, my clothes stuck to my skin. I wanted them off.

I wanted someone’s hands on my breasts, on my belly, on my sex

Oh, God. The Haze had never been this strong.

It was probably an accumulation of every sexual need and frustration I’d repressed throughout the past three Seasons.

I should’ve expected that. Of course, this was going to happen. What had I been thinking? I wasn’t. And now I was paying the price.

I looked behind me at my home, a place where I’d normally find safety and comfort. But not right now. No way. My parents were probably already making the most of the Haze.

The idea of Selene and Jeremy wasn’t much better. But they acted more like people, less like wolves—respecting boundaries, privacy, societal norms.

They’d probably make it back to their apartment downtown before they finally acted upon the urge.

I put them all out of my mind and ran for the trail toward the woods.

I passed humans, totally oblivious, minding their own business, and some wolves who were, like me, in the first stage of the Haze and trying to catch their bearings.

Easier for them. They weren’t virgins. They’d had lots of sex during past seasons. Not me. I was hazed out of my goddamned mind.

At the entrance of the woods, I stripped. I didn’t care if someone saw me. I needed to shift.

Right here.

Right now.

Normally, I was in complete control when I shifted, but not when the Haze was taking over. No. I couldn’t stay in this human form any longer.

I closed my eyes and felt the bliss of shifting.

Usually, I would feel every bit of the change: the limbs stretching, the muscles tensing, the body growing tall, the red fur, matching my human hair, that sprouted from my skin. Covering me whole.

But not now. Now, I felt nothing but the Haze.

I breathed and my voice was a growl. My fingers, now charcoal-black claws. Through the eyes of a wolf, everything was more aggressive, more violent.

Especially now. When the Haze was just beginning.

Now in my full wolf shape, I raced deep into the woods.

The cold wind blew over my fur, the hard ground was moist under my paws, and the scents of the woods filled my nose.

Howls resounded in the woods. The unmated kind. The kind who were looking for a partner.

I cursed inwardly. In my Haze, I’d forgotten to think of the implications.

Going into the woods at the beginning of the season was like begging to be fucked. These woods were like a college bar. All thirst and stupid impulses.

Any second now, a wolf was going to get a sniff of my scent and recognize I had no attachment.

They would stalk me until I yielded. More than one, I was sure of it.

A game, a challenge, for who could win the unpartnered she-wolf first.

Even if my body begged to differ, I wouldn’t give in so easily. These wolves could have as much sex as they wanted. I wasn’t judging. But I was waiting.

Waiting for that moment, that instant, that sudden indescribable look of recognition when two weres make eye contact and know that they’re mates for life.

I couldn’t wait for that to happen to me.

But out here in the woods at the start of the Haze? It was unlikely, to say the least.

I became hyper-aware of the male wolves, their every movement, their scent.

I ran brazenly, releasing pheromones into the air, luring them closer. And soon I knew they would have me cornered.

Five of them. All hungry male wolves.

My body liked it. Oh, did it ever.

For a second, I wondered if this would be the year.

Would I finally cave? Would I give into these five males, taking them all at once? Would I finally lose my virginity, right here, right now in the middle of the forest?

As the Haze took over and all my desires to wait for my mate began to melt away, I asked myself, what was stopping me? Honestly?

I was so close I could reach out and touch his rippling muscles and golden skin. I lifted my eyes and chanced a look.

A brutal, jagged face that shouldn’t be handsome, but was. Thick eyebrows that looked coarse to the touch, like a hint of his werewolf form.

And a nose, even though slightly crooked—no doubt broken in some past scuffle—that couldn’t interfere with his so-sexy-it-hurts looks.

The Alpha took a step closer as if to test me. I could feel every hair on my body rise in trepidation. Or...was it temptation?

“Next time you draw me,” Aiden said, “come closer.”

“Oh...okay,” I sputtered like an idiot.

And then, just as quickly as he’d appeared, Aiden Norwood turned and took off, leaving me by the river, alone. I sighed, feeling every muscle in my body ease.

It wasn't an everyday event to see the Alpha out of the Pack House, the headquarters for all pack business.

And a stressed alpha meant a dysfunctional alpha, which meant a dysfunctional pack...you get the picture.

No one wanted that.

I decided, with the little light that was left of the day, I would finish drawing to clear my mind. Just me and the river in peace.

But all I could see were Aiden Norwood’s eyes.

And how very wrong I had drawn them. The Alpha was right. I could do better.

If I could just get...closer.

Honestly?

Was dann?

Was ging es mich an, wen Aiden vögelte.

„Manno.“ Ich konnte Michelles Stimme fast in meinem Kopf hören.

Du verstehst, worauf ich hinaus will.
