Chapter 3

LAURIE

“Come on, Lorena Sanchez, we don’t have all day!” Macy’s voice echoed from the living room, her impatience evident. She only used my full name when she was annoyed, and it never failed to irk me.

“I’m coming, I’m coming,” I called back, hastily finishing my hair. “I just needed to fix it a little.”

“Laurie, we’re going to get our hair done after we buy our dresses. I know a great place near the mall,” Macy reminded me, her excitement palpable.

“Alright, I’m ready,” I said, grabbing my purse and joining her at the front door. She was practically bouncing on her toes, eager to get going.

As I gazed at my reflection in the store mirror, I couldn’t help but admire the dress I’d chosen. It was elegant and sophisticated, with a hint of sexiness in its black hue. The form-fitting design accentuated my curves without being uncomfortable, and the knee-length hem and sweetheart neckline revealed just the right amount of skin.

My dark brown hair cascaded in loose waves, and I wore red lipstick at Macy’s insistence. As usual, she was right—it looked good on me. I almost felt sexy.

“Laurie, you look amazing!” Macy squealed from the doorway, startling me.

“Jeez, Mace, you scared me,” I complained, but she just grinned.

“Sorry, I can’t help being excited.” Her smile was infectious.

“You look incredible, too, Macy. Michael won’t be able to take his eyes off you,” I teased, winking at her.

“Shut up,” she laughed, but I could tell she was pleased. Macy’s long, white strapless dress made her look both gorgeous and sophisticated. She had a magnetic aura that drew men to her like moths to a flame, and I envied her effortless charm and confidence.

“Ready to go? Our cab will be here in ten minutes,” she said, checking her phone.

“Yeah, I think I’m ready,” I replied, my nerves making my voice waver slightly.

“Don’t worry, babe. You look stunning, and tonight is going to be so much fun,” Macy reassured me.

“Let me just grab my coat and purse, and then we can head out,” I said. She nodded and left my room, giving me a moment to take a deep breath and try to summon some confidence.

As our cab pulled up to the grand Winston Hotel, I couldn’t help but feel intimidated by the well-dressed guests entering the building. Macy paid the driver, and we stepped out, trying to walk gracefully in our high heels.

“You look so nervous, Laurie. Just relax,” Macy chided gently.

“I am relaxed,” I muttered, though my heart was pounding.

“Sure you are,” she giggled, and we made our way inside. Two bodyguards checked the guest list, and I held my breath, hoping Michael had remembered to add our names.

“Your names, please,” one of the guards asked impatiently.

“Macy Hawthorn and Lorena Sanchez,” Macy replied, her voice steady and polite.

“You may pass,” he said, finding our names on the list. Macy winked at him as we walked by, and I rolled my eyes, playfully punching her arm.

“What?” she whispered, feigning innocence.

“You were flirting with the bodyguard, for crying out loud,” I murmured, shaking my head.

“So what? Did you see his arms? I bet he’s got some serious muscles under that suit,” she giggled, and I couldn’t help but laugh.

“You’re something else, you know that?” I told her, smirking.

“We’ll see how you behave around a handsome man tonight,” she teased, and we entered the ballroom, the sound of our heels clicking on the marble floor.

“There’s Michael. Come on,” Macy said, leading the way. We exchanged pleasantries, and Michael offered to get us drinks. As he walked away, I couldn’t help but notice how well he and Macy seemed to fit together. He was handsome, with an athletic build and dark blond hair that complemented her strawberry blonde locks. They both seemed a little shy, but their chemistry was undeniable.

As the night wore on, I found myself enjoying the mysterious atmosphere created by the guests’ masks. I was grateful that Macy had recognized Michael so easily, and I watched them talk and laugh together, their innocent touches sending a thrill through me. It was clear that Michael was genuinely interested in Macy, and I couldn’t have been happier for her.

My attention was drawn back to the crowd when I noticed a man staring at me. I couldn’t shake the feeling that he’d been watching me for a while, and his intense gaze made me uneasy. I tried to ignore him, focusing on my friends and the fun we were having, but I couldn’t help but wonder why he was so fixated on me.
