Chapter 3

Our lives may not have fit together, but ohhh did our souls know how to dance…—K. Towne Jr.

LEILA

Mate—something I had always wondered about while going through my life.

At age twenty-one, my wolf and I should have been nervous about not being able to find our mate yet.

It should have been a drive in my mind that would repeat itself over and over for me to search out my mate, but in some weird way, I had not felt that urge yet.

I went over in my head the possibilities, and also did some studies, when I finally realized that I did not feel the urgency to find my mate.

It bothered me, and I wondered if something was wrong with me mentally.

The conclusions I came up with were one, I was a rare case and had no mate; and two, my wolf and I were not completely in tune with our minds, and hence, no mate yet, until we were complete as one.

Regardless, I felt that I had a life ahead of me, and fate had already written down my life story.

I would not quicken it and I would not push it. It would happen in due time.

Today, my dad was coming home with the alpha. I woke up, showered, tied my hair into a ponytail, and dressed in a faded yellow Mario T-shirt and black sweats as I hopped my way downstairs to help my mom cook breakfast.

We were busy chatting back and forth, catching up on school and pack news, and then, after I helped her with breakfast, I told her I was heading out for a run around our pack territory and I would be back.

She told me I could go, but not to be out too long, because my dad would be coming back soon.

I started off with a slow jog as I placed my earbuds in my ears and turned on my iPod. It wasn’t long until I fell into the beat of my music and allowed my muscles to move along with it.

My wolf was content and so was I.

When I ran, it helped ease my mind from all the stress and tension building up inside of me. It helped me think clearly and get rid of any negative feelings.

The wind that touched my skin as I ran helped soothe my now warmed, sweaty skin.

After my run, I headed back to the pack house and saw the alpha’s vehicle in the driveway. I smiled, because this meant my dad was finally home.

I broke into another run as I ran back up to the pack house. I opened the door quickly and called out for my dad.

There were a few pack members sitting in the common area and a few eating breakfast still. They turned when they saw me, and I blushed at the sudden attention I brought onto myself.

I looked around and did not see my parents. I wondered where they had gone.

I awkwardly walked across the room, and after disappearing from everyone’s sight, I bounded up the stairs, following my parents’ scents to the alpha’s office.

I knocked three times, and I heard a masculine voice telling me to come in. I hesitantly opened the door and poked my head inside, taking in a room I had never seen before.

The alpha’s office was huge. Along the walls were bookcases stacked up to the top of the walls. It was records of pack members and history.

At the left of his office were the fireplace and leather couches surrounding it, and at the right was a table with maps strewn on it, clearly a place where the alpha would discuss alliances and territory.

My father cleared his throat. I whipped my head back to them and gave them a smile.

“Hi,” I stupidly said.

“Lee, my baby girl, come here.” My dad had a grin on his face. He still looked handsome as ever.

“Am I interrupting something?” I asked, now glancing at the alpha. I couldn’t make out his face yet because of the blinding sun that was coming through the large window behind him.

“No, we were just running through some ideas. Come in, I missed you,” he urged, walking toward me.

He didn’t need to ask me twice. I allowed the rest of my body to pop out from behind the door and closed the door gently behind me to run up to my dad and throw my arms around him.

“I missed you too!” I hugged him tightly.

“Alpha, this is my daughter, Leila,” my dad announced proudly as he pulled me toward the desk.

I looked at my feet until I heard him speak. “Good to see you again, Leila.”

My head whipped up at hearing him addressing me. I knew it was rude to stare at my alpha, but when my eyes landed on his face, I inhaled sharply. He was handsome.

I had never seen a man who could take my breath away by just looking at me.

His stormy yellow eyes were cold and emotionless. Cheekbones were high and defined, as was his jaw—perfectly chiseled.

His auburn, tousled hair almost made him look impish, but completely contrasted the firm, sweet line of his lips.

I found myself thinking dirty thoughts as I looked at his inviting, perfectly shaped lips.

“H-hello, Alpha.” My voice was a little deeper than it should have been, and I mentally slapped myself for sounding like a hormonal teenager.

“Are you back here permanently, Leila?” he asked, his voice controlled and cold. It sent a shudder through my body…but not in a bad way.

“Not yet, Alpha. I will be coming back at the end of the month,” I answered him, tearing my gaze away from his lips.

I decided that I needed to distract myself by staring at his pencil on the desk as if it were the most interesting thing in the world.

He grunted his response. My dad said he would catch up with me later and told me to leave so that he and the alpha could finish their previous conversation.

I nodded and walked out the door, but I did not miss the penetrating gaze from him.

I was just on my way out when I heard voices downstairs that sounded frantic. Curiously, I walked down the narrow hallway and headed down the stairs to the common area.

When they saw me, the man, who had a frantic, scared look, came to me and grabbed me by both of my arms.

“You need to help me,” he frantically said.

“What’s wrong? You need to calm down, sir. You are hurting me.” I tried pulling my arms out of his tightening hands. He released immediately when he saw that he was holding me too tightly.

“My mate, Ellen—she is giving birth right now. I need your help.” He sounded so helpless and desperate. My instinct kicked in and I nodded.

“I need you to carry her to the medical wing. We have supplies there that can help her. I will head there first to prepare for her,” I ordered.

He immediately sprinted out to his home, while I walked quickly to the medical wing, where I quickly headed into the storage room.

I grabbed a couple of clean blankets, wipes, a nasal aspirator, and latex gloves.

When he arrived with his wife, I was already in the room rearranging it. The poor woman was crying as the pain was already coming fast and furious.

Thankfully, she was in a dress, because I wanted to check her first before making her change into a hospital gown. But judging by the pain she was having now, I would say we didn’t have much time.

“Hi, Ellen, how are you feeling right now?” I asked as I gestured to him to place her down on the hospital bed.

“It hurts,” she whimpered, holding on to her stomach. “Goddamnit, I am going to kill you, Charles.”

I chuckled at her reaction to the pain, and Charles’s face turned pale as he remained by her side, holding her hand. She clutched it tightly as another wave of contractions hit her.

“Is baby a girl or a boy?” I asked.

“Girl,” Charles replied weakly, not being able to be strong when seeing his mate in pain.

I put on the gloves and lubed my fingers, needing to check how far dilated she was.

It didn’t take much for me to realize that she was already fully dilated, and her baby was already crowning. Immediately, I pulled out.

“Okay, baby is moving fast. She’s already down the birth canal and well on her way out.” I wheeled a stool up at the end of the bed.

“Spread your feet apart and angle them. It will make it easier for you to push.” I grabbed a cloth and placed it under her. “I’m going to need you to lift your butt slightly for me, Ellen.”

She complied, and then cried out as another contraction hit her again. Her grip on her mate was tight to the point that her hand was turning white.

“Okay, I’m going to need you to push when you feel a contraction coming. Breathe in and breathe out when you do it,” I instructed as I saw the head crowning.

It didn’t take long at all before we heard the shrill cries of the new addition to the pack. She had a good pair of lungs on her, and she did not like leaving her place of comfort in her mom’s stomach.

I quickly wrapped her up and gently handed her to Ellen. Charles’s eyes were misty as he looked at his baby, and Ellen looked up to me with exhaustion and happiness in her eyes.

“Thank you, Dr. Thorn,” Ellen said tiredly.

“Don’t thank me. This was all you,” I smiled back. “Congratulations, Ellen and Charles.”

After their family bonding time, I took the baby away to clean her up and also to check her vitals before returning her to her parents.

Ellen and Charles were not okay to leave yet, as I wanted to monitor Ellen and the baby for the next few days, so they were staying in the medical wing.

I told them I would instruct a maid to check in on them later.

When I was finally done, I walked out of the room and quickly ran into the storage room, where I leaned against the cold wall and held up my shaky hands.

I had just delivered a baby. I was freaking out.

I had gone to school and learned to be a pack doctor, and we had experience every now and then in the field, but I had never done it all alone, without any instructions.

This was very new to me, but it also brought a newfound confidence in me that I had never seen before. I breathed deeply to calm my nerves and closed my eyes, counting slowly.
