Chapter 3

“What do you think of Layla?” Hunter asked his brother as they sat at the kitchen island.

Jace didn’t look up from his phone. “Who?”

Hunter rolled his eyes. “Layla, the new girl.”

Jace looked up to him with a smirk. “She seems like kind of a bore, but if you like her, then get some, bro!”

Hunter punched his brother. “You’re an idiot.”

“Are you two playing nice?” their mother Tasha asked as she entered the kitchen.

Jace laughed. “Always, Mama.” He stood and kissed her on the cheek before walking out of the pack house to find Anna, his new fling, for a little action before dinner time.

Tasha shook her head with a smile before sitting beside Hunter. “How’s it going, hun?”

“Fine. Looking forward to July.”

Tasha looked confused. “Really?”

Hunter shrugged. “You know how Jace is with girls, but I’ve been waiting for my mate to finally come around. Once I turn eighteen, I will finally get what I’ve been waiting for.”

Tasha gave Hunter a smirk. “You have any girl in mind?”

Hunter chuckled. “Maybe. But it doesn’t mean anything unless she’s actually my mate.”

Tasha shook her head. “Good luck, babe. Now, go make sure your brother doesn’t get someone pregnant.”

Hunter laughed before kissing his mom’s cheek and walking out of the house.

Jace had left the house with one thing on his mind: find Anna and scratch that itch. But when he saw Layla sitting on the grass, he decided to make his day a little more entertaining.

“Do you mind?” Layla said sarcastically at the shadow standing above her.

“Not at all.” Jace grinned.

Layla rolled her eyes as she realized who it was. “Jace, what do you want?”

“Just came to say hi,” he replied.

Layla glared up at him. “You’re never nice, so what do you want?”

Jace sat down next to her and looked out over the training field. “You know, we could just go hang out by the lake, just you and me.”

Layla shook her head. “I’d rather do literally anything else.”

Jace laughed. “Good, because you’re such a buzzkill.” He placed his hand on her thigh and she pushed it off before standing above him.

“Jace, I don’t like you. I don’t want to be near you. I am nice simply out of respect for your title. You are an entitled, selfish, man-whore jerk and I want nothing to do with you. Leave me alone.”

Jace stood, his anger rising. “You dare speak to an alpha like that?”

Layla looked at him defiantly. “You won’t do anything, or you would have to explain to your dad how much of a tool you’ve been.”

Jace scowled at her before storming off. He had just been teasing her, wanting to see how she would respond. She was so irritating. As if she knew just how to get under his skin.

Layla let out a huff before realizing Hunter was standing by a tree and had seen the whole thing.

She saw his eyes darken, and for a moment she thought he was going to punish her for speaking that way to his brother. But suddenly, he turned around and bolted back up the hill to the pack house.

When Hunter had seen Jace messing with Layla, he just about lost it. He knew his brother could be a bit of a jerk sometimes, but he had gone too far.

“Jace!” Hunter yelled as he walked through the back door toward the pool. Jace was sitting on a chaise near the water when Hunter stormed into the backyard.

Jace turned, taken aback by his brother’s darkening eyes.

“Hunter, chill…” Jace stood and raised his hands.

“You’re a real jerk sometimes, but this time you went too far,” Hunter growled. Before Jace could realize what was happening, Hunter swung his fist and connected to the spot right below his left eye.

Jace fell backward before gaining his balance and lunging at his brother, taking him down in a tackle. They punched, shoved, and yelled as they wrestled out their anger.

When they finally finished, they sat beside each other on the ground, scowling and refusing to speak.

Layla walked around the side of the house, hoping to avoid the twins she thought were inside. She was surprised when she found them sitting on the ground in the backyard angry, bloody, and bruised.

“What happened?” she asked as she took in the sight of them.

“Nothing!” they both answered.

“You guys are idiots.” She walked toward the house and then turned around when they began to get up off the ground. “No, you stay there. If your mom sees you like that, she’ll have a fit. Wait here.”

The boys sat down on chairs and waited like two kids in timeout until Layla returned with her supplies.

She walked to Hunter and knelt on the ground below him. “You okay?”

He nodded with a frown still plastered on his face as she cleaned the cut on his eyebrow and checked his bruises before sending him off with a smile and a change of clothes.

Hunter walked into the house hesitantly, not wanting to leave his brother alone with her again.

Layla walked to Jace and looked at the small gash on his cheek and the bruises on his face. “Are you all right?”

“Like you care,” Jace snapped.

Layla shook her head and wiped his cut with an alcohol swab. He winced at the sting and Layla smiled. “You don’t have to be such a jerk, Jace.”

Jace gave her a small glare before standing. “Thanks,” he mumbled as he walked back into the house.

Layla sighed before grabbing her things and walking up to her room. She had been there for almost two weeks, and Jace was still the same.

Sadly, being friends with Hunter meant she would have to constantly deal with his jerk brother, and she wasn’t too thrilled about that.
