1: Chapter 1

Book One: Apollo’s Angel

Dear Viola Del Vonsula,

I, the Fairy Godmother, have an offer that will change your life forever.

Keep in mind that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity full of adventure and danger.

But the ultimate prize is true love.

You, Viola, have been chosen to take part in the two-hundredth anniversary of Fairy Godmother Inc.

I know much about you—more than you might even know about yourself.

I see you now, reading this letter, with a frown on your pretty little face.

But trust that I have your best interests at heart.

I know you have lived a life with no family. I know you were orphaned as a small child and had to grow up too fast.

You were once a dreamer. You saw the beauty in everything and everyone.

Now you hide away in fear.

But I have great news, Viola.

I am giving you a chance to find a happily-ever-after.

Love is the secret to life, Viola, and it could be yours.

Please take a moment to imagine falling in love with a handsome, dashing prince.

I know your first thought will be to throw this letter away but please do not, dear girl.

For heaven’s sake, this is your only chance at happiness—trust me, I’ve checked.

I’m the All-knowing.

Fate is my specialty.

Destiny is my hobby.

The choice is yours.

This offer will last until tomorrow night when the clock strikes twelve.

If you accept, you will recieve the rest of the details.

The first meeting will take place in the French Quarter past the tall, charming man in white.

Do not be late, or this fantasy will be nothing more than a rotting pumpkin.

By accepting this offer, you agree to pay for this experience with half of all your assets, including but not limited to bank accounts, IRAs/401(k)s, jewelry, vehicles, clothes, shoes, electronics, real estate, animals, and animal belongings.

If you fail to complete payment, all your existing relationships will end and you will be alone in the world.

Everything about the Fairytale Challenge will rely solely on fate.

All aspects will be unpredictable and potentially dangerous, even possibly resulting in your demise.

Godspeed,

Fairy Godmother, President & CEO, Fairy Godmother Inc.

“Where dreams come true.”

I stare, mouth open, at the golden, sparkly letter pushed under my door this morning.

The last time I checked, the postal service does not deliver at four in the morning.

Why? Because that’s creepy, and not how business is done.

They work at normal hours.

Only mentally unstable people slide letters under your door at four in the morning.

You know who I’m talking about.

Stalkers, serial killers, rapists.

But this letter is something different.

The paper is feather-soft and glows like it’s lit from within.

And when I shake it, I can even hear a faint jingle, like if you shook Tinkerbell.

Apparently, folks, the Fairy Godmother herself felt the need to write to me and invite me to find a charming prince of fate’s choosing.

My heart pounds with indecision and confusion.

Is there any way this is real?

Ok, Viola, let’s not get on the bus to Crazy Town just yet.

Let’s look at the facts:

*This letter is glowing. Seems impossible.

*This ‘Fairy Godmother’ knows things she most definitely should not know about my life. Very unsettling.

What does it all mean?

If this is a hidden camera show to test dumb and gullible women, then I will be a proud statistic.

This could be a study approved by Dr. Phil!

Maybe I would get some counseling out of it!

I’ve secretly wanted doctors to look at me and tell me if I really am psychotic or if I have been mistreated my whole life, and it’s not my fault.

Then we would cry together. I could break down my emotional walls!

I could get sent to a really nice beachfront rehab facility.

I’m just the right amount of messed up to show up.

I glance back at the glowing letter and can’t wipe the silly smile off my face.

I have bought a ticket to Crazy Town.

Or a nice bed at a rehab center.

Some nights in my dreams, I see a pair of dark eyes searching for me.

Every time I wake up from that dream, I promise to find those eyes, no matter what it takes.

Even if that means following some insane letter.

Midnight tonight.

Fairy Godmother, you can count me in.
