1: Prologue

Prologue

The only thing I saw before I dropped everything that was in my hands were those icy blue eyes looking at me. They looked at me with a shock that disappeared as quickly as I blinked.

I felt my whole body tingle for the few seconds that our eyes met. He snapped his head back and I quickly picked up my books and headed to the doors.

What was that strange, yet comforting feeling?

Before I knew what was happening, it was already too late.

Too late to go back to the normal days of my normal life.

Those icy blue eyes were the start of my life in hell...

Or not.

I just have to obey everything he says.

“Kneel for me,” he said to me. I knew that I couldn’t disobey him. So I went down on my knees, knelt down, and bent my head low.

Chapter 1: A Full Moon

LILLIANA

Here I was, again. I was staring at the full moon. I found myself here more often the past few days. It was almost the end of autumn, but still very warm.

We had the most beautiful view. We lived at the edge of town, close to the woods. It was only an eight-minute walk from our backyard to the woods, and at the end of the woods is a cliff.

I came here to draw; there was something magical about this view. I have a habit of dozing off in my own world while drawing. The sun went down slowly and I forgot about the time.

Halfway through my drawing, I had the feeling someone was staring at me. I put down my pencil and looked around, but saw nothing.

Out of my own bubble, I saw the sun had set and I stood up quickly to pack my stuff and go back home. I don’t think anyone will notice when I get home late, again. Oh boy, was I wrong…

***

Before I go further, let me introduce myself and tell you a bit about my family.

Hi, I’m Lilliana Mackenna, 18 years old and a senior student at Clearwater High. At five feet six inches, I was the smallest member of the family, but I stood out in spite of that.

I have long, deep red hair and two different colored eyes. One is blue and the other one is so dark it is almost black. You may think that is amazing and you know what, you are totally right.

I live with my mom, Lania; my dad, Dominic; and three older brothers—Alexander, Xander, and Luka—in one house.

They are six, four, and three years older than me respectively, and all around and above six feet tall, with blond or brown hair and green or brown eyes.

And you guessed right, that is pretty chaotic, but I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Have I told you already that they can be a little overprotective? No? Well, you will soon find that out. Let us continue the story and I will talk to you later.

I opened the back door and closed it slowly to not make a sound. As I turned around, the lights turned on and my three slightly angry brothers were standing still.

You could tell by their faces they were not happy with me. “Where were you? Any idea how late it is?”

I flinched a little at Alexander’s angry voice. “I’m sorry, I dozed off while drawing,” was my response, which wasn’t a lie.

Alexander had put on his even more angry face with me and said, “The next time I will drag your ass inside myself.” After saying that, he sighed and looked at me.

Luka chuckled and stopped when Alexander gave him the same face as me. I couldn’t help but laugh.

Xander had been quiet the whole time now and I looked at him to see what he had to say. He finally let out a sigh before asking, “You know what time of the year it is, right?”

I looked confused for a second, and then I remembered, it’s mating season.

The time of the year when all unmated wolves are looking for their mate and they are extremely horny, more dangerous, and not to forget more territorial.

I understood now why they were mad at me. I am an unmated she-wolf and being alone out in the woods is asking for trouble. They could smell I didn’t have a mate, yet.

You could see the guilt on my face and they became less tense and angry. “Go to bed quick and we won’t tell mom or dad about it.” I nodded my head to Xander and headed for the stairs.

Once in my room, I let out a sigh and placed my stuff on my desk. I started to undress and threw my clothes on my chair and put on my pj’s.

I grabbed my sketchbook and slowly walked to my bed and stared out the window. The feeling that someone was staring at me was back. It gave me the chills, but in a good kinda way.

This feeling made me warm on the inside. I opened my sketchbook and flipped through the pages. One drawing took me back to the first time I drew the view of the cliff and the trees.

I got my sketchbook for my 16th birthday.

I got up early today, couldn’t sleep anymore. Today was my 16th birthday. When I stood up I went to the bathroom to take a shower.

With a towel around me, I walked back to my room and got dressed. The night before I had already picked out my outfit, a yellow skirt and a black crop top, knee-high socks, and a black pair of flats.

Once I am dressed, I walk back to do my hair and makeup. My hair is naturally curly and untamable.

I look in the mirror and decide to let my hair down for the day. I turn around looking for my makeup bag. I find it and I chuckle as I look at my chair. It is buried under my clothes.

With my makeup bag in hand, I walk back to the bathroom and start doing my makeup. My skin is pale and I have little bags under my eyes. Great.

I start with concealer to try and hide my bags, and next is foundation, mascara, eyeliner, and a bit of lip gloss.

A smile appears on my face when I look in the mirror, happy to see that I look kinda healthy now and I chuckle again. Alexander and Luka have said so many times that I look like a walking corpse.

With another look, I go down the stairs to the kitchen, and to my surprise, everyone is waiting for me there. Balloons are in the kitchen, and now that I take a better look around, balloons are everywhere.

I can’t help but smile as I am greeted by my dad. “Happy 16th birthday, Lilly,” he said, and soon I heard it from my mother, and yes, even all my brothers.

They all have a present for me ready and I can see that they can’t wait to see my reaction. I lift my eyebrow up and look at Xander, who has the biggest smile of them all.

I take a seat at the counter in the kitchen and Mom gives me a cup of tea. When I take a sip of my tea, everyone takes a seat. Xander sits next to me and can’t sit still.

So I turn to him and he looks at Mom to see if he can give me my present. Sometimes I wonder if I am really the youngest in the house. Mom nods to him and he gives me a flat but big present.

I take it from him and unwrap it slowly, I like to tease him sometimes. When I have it unwrapped, I see that it is a sketchbook, and I smile and place it on the counter.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” I shriek and jump out of my chair and hug him. He blushes a little. “You’re welcome,” he mumbled.

I flip through it and breathe in the new paper smell. It has a little woodsy smell and I love it. “My turn,” and Alexander stands up to give me my next gift.

I take a present in the shape of a box and look curiously at him. He gives me a wink and sits back down. I unwrap it and see a wooden box with my name on it. I lift my eyebrow to him.

He laughs. “Open it.” Slowly I open the box and to my surprise, it is filled with drawing equipment. Alex is smiling from ear to ear now and I feel my cheeks turn pink, if not red.

I stand up and walk to him and give him a huge hug as well as a “thank you” before I go back to my chair. These are the best presents I could get and there is even more.

While drinking my tea, Luka stands up to give me another present. He is holding a small box with a big bow on it. I tilt my head a little as he hands me my present, not sure what to think of it.

All eyes are on me while I slowly take the bow off and unwrap it. I open the box and…

I am suddenly snapped out of my thoughts by a loud howl.
