CHAPTER TWO

ROSE

He pushed me against the nearest wall with his body tight against mine, his growing erection poking my lower back.

While one hand held both my arms together on the wall above my head, his other hand started to slide down my body.

His hand started at my wrists, rubbing small circles all the way down my arm to the side of my left breast, where his fingers outlined the side of it.

He continued to slide his hand south over my ribcage, making me squirm against him. This pulled a low growl from his chest.

His hand stopped at my hip, grabbing it in a bruising hold, and he pulled my hips closer to him.

A soft moan escaped my lips as I tried to look back over my shoulder; I was looking into golden eyes filled with lust and excitement.

I wasn’t scared one bit but was beyond aroused, with tingling feelings all over my body and butterflies in my tummy.

He bent his head down next to my ear, pushing his erection harder against my body, and with a low growl, whispered something I didn’t expect.

“This can’t be true... I’ve waited my whole life for you.”

And just like that, he turned around and walked away, leaving me standing against the wall trying to figure out what the hell had just happened.

I was now a horny, panting mess, and he hadn’t even done anything special to me or said anything special that would make my reaction reasonable.

My body was betraying me. I craved the intimacy and affection I’d felt with Noah, and now this stranger too?

Oh, good Lord, is he also one of Anna’s brothers?

I had to talk to Anna.

I didn’t even make myself a cup of coffee to relax. I just needed to get answers, and Anna was the only one who could help me.

As I walked back into the movie room, looking at Anna sleeping, I felt too bad to wake her up just because my hormones were going wild, so I did what I always do to calm down.

Grabbing my phone, I went back downstairs to do what I love to do—I went outside to gaze at the stars.

As I stepped outside onto the back porch, I immediately felt a cool breeze washing over my heated body. It felt refreshing, and I kept walking to the lake in front of me while slowly enjoying the scenery.

Anna’s mansion was surrounded by forest, grass and, of course, a stunning giant lake.

It looked like a painting in real life, and I could’ve stayed there for the rest of my life and wouldn’t even have missed a thing out in the busy city.

I sat down on the small deck by the lake, dipping my toes into the cold water and looking up into the clearest sky I had ever seen, decorated with the most beautiful stars I had ever seen.

I kept staring at the stars, calming myself, when a feeling of guilt washed over me.

I hadn’t called Jack to tell him I would be at Anna’s for the week, so I thought I might as well do it now. I got my phone out of my pocket and dialed his number.

Ring... ring... ring... ring.

“What the fuck do you want?”

“Well, hello to you too, Jack. It’s so nice to hear your voice after this weird day.”

“I’m busy. What do you want?”

“Jack, baby, come back to bed!”

“Are you kidding me? You’re cheating on me!”

“Yeah, and…? It’s just sex.”

“Thank you,” I said with a light laugh. Suddenly all the guilt I’d felt earlier ebbed away.

“Excuse me?”

“Thank you for making this the easiest decision of my life. I’m divorcing your cheating ass,” I said with a laugh before ending the call.

I played on the dock, laughing like a villain until it died down into a full-blown sob.

I knew things between Jack and me weren’t sunshine and roses, but hearing him cheat on me and not even try to hide it ripped my heart right out of my chest.

The pain I felt was indescribable, and I wouldn’t wish it on anybody, not even my biggest enemy. Even she deserved better.

I must have fallen asleep out on the dock as the next thing I knew, I was in the warmth and comfort of strong arms.

My heart fluttered even though it had broken a while ago.

The smell of the forest, honey, and vanilla filled me up and made me feel safe and wanted, which caused me to snuggle closer and drift further into a deeper sleep.

For the first time in two years, I slept like a baby and woke up feeling like I’d got three years of well-deserved sleep into one night.

I tried to roll over to my other side, trying to remember how I’d got back into my bed when everything came crashing back to me.

I sat up as fast as I could and realized I was not in the spare bedroom or in the movie room in the mansion.

I started to panic and looked around frantically to make out where I was, but I couldn’t make out a lot of detail as it was still dark out.

I obviously didn’t sleep that long, I thought to myself.

I got up from the bed to look around. Switching on the lights, I noticed I was inside a log cabin.

I went into the hall and heard voices. With my nosy curiosity, I went to see who it was.

I looked through the gap of the door to see the two guys I’d met earlier with another guy that had his back to me.

I could see that his bare back was covered with old scars and fresh scrapes with dried blood.

“Why the fuck did you bring her here? Are you insane?” Noah yelled to the guy with his back to me.

“You expected me to leave her out in the cold after I told you what I heard her go through? You fucking selfish asshole! She is our mate, and she needs us.”

“She is married!” Noah yelled back in an animalistic voice that made me look away in fear.

“She is broken! We don’t need a broken woman in this lifestyle. They will just use her against us,” the other guy I’d met said in a calmer voice.

“I felt the same connection with her as you two idiots did, and I know she felt it too. I am not willing to lose my mate because of your arrogance.

“Yes, she is married, but from what Anna told me, he is a real asshole that doesn’t deserve or love her.”

My heart broke all over again hearing those words from a stranger. I didn’t mean for a sob to escape as I ran down the stairs to the front door.

Fuck!” was the last yelled word I heard before I ran into the forest, in a direction I had no idea where it would lead, but I hoped it would take me back to Anna.

I heard pounding noises behind me, and as I turned my head to look at what had made the sound, I saw the most frightening creature running toward me.

A wolf! A fucking wolf!

I ran as fast as I could without knowing where I was going until the most clichéd thing ever happened to me.

Jip, you guessed it.

I tripped over a broken tree stump, twisting my ankle. As I fell to the ground, I heard a loud howl, then felt the worst pain imaginable going through my right shoulder.

The beast was standing over me, blood dripping from his teeth and eyeing me like I was the best kill he was about to make, when another wolf, bigger than the first one, attacked him out of nowhere.

I screamed as loud as I could, hoping someone close by would hear my screams and save me from the monsters, but it was too late.

The darkness consumed me, and all I could feel was a pain so bad I can’t describe it…

And fear.

***

“What the fuck happened to Rose?”

“Shit, I’m sorry, sis, it’s all my fault.”

“No, Noah, it’s all our fault. I found her asleep outside after I heard her telling her husband she is divorcing him.

“I took her to the safe house so that she could get some sleep and be safe, but we didn’t realize she had woken up and overheard our conversation about her.”

“Oh God! What did you assholes say about her? That you didn’t want her because she is married? Fucking idiots!”

Before I caught the rest of the conversation, darkness consumed me yet again.

***

I woke up with an irritating beeping in my ears and a massive need to go to the bathroom.

I opened my eyes and looked around the room. I was amazed by all the flowers and notes around me.

I looked around again and was met by three gorgeous pairs of eyes.

All three pairs were filled with relief and regret, and I couldn’t help my heart fluttering at the sight of them; I immediately felt that magical attraction to all of them.

I cleared my throat to get my mind back to the reason I needed to get up.

I tried to sit up, only to fall back as immense pain shot through my shoulder. I was immediately gently held back by Noah as he told me to keep still.

“I need to use the bathroom,” I said in a raspy voice while blushing.

Noah gave a small laugh, helping me up so I could go do what I needed to do.

As I got out of the bathroom, I saw Anna sitting on my bed, looking pissed.

I tried to hide my smile and failed miserably as she just started to smile back at me before pulling me in for a big hug.

I held her tight for a while before the door opened, and my biggest nightmare came walking in.

“Rose, love, I was so worried about you.” Jack’s sarcastic voice boomed behind me.

“She has been here for three days, and now you show up? What kind of a sick asshole are you?” Anna said with a bitter look on her face.

I smirked to myself with my back turned to Jack as I heard my best friend giving my soon-to-be ex-husband a good piece of her mind.

“Fuck off, Tinkerbell, you are not welcome here,” he snapped back at her.

That was it! I’d had enough!

“Security,” I yelled at the top of my lungs.

Not even five seconds later, three furious brothers came running into the room with security hot on their asses as I went off at Jack in my hospital room.

“Get the fuck out of the room, you prick! You will never see me again, and if you ever come near me, I will flatten your ass, and I will enjoy doing it.

“My lawyer will send you all the paperwork.”

And with that said, I turned back to go to my bed.

“You dumb fucking bitch. I will never let you go. You are mine, and you will be sorry.”

Those were the last words he yelled at me before security and three raging brothers pulled him out of my room.

“Rose…I…umm…I need to talk to you. About what happened…about what you saw.”

I looked at her funny, not knowing what she was talking about.

“You were attacked,” she said, not looking into my eyes.

I knew something was wrong; she always looked me dead in the eye when speaking to me, and now she wasn’t.

My eyes got bigger and bigger as I started to remember what had happened after I’d heard Jack cheating on me.

I remembered the safety, the warm arms wrapping around me, and then the guys saying the most hurtful things about me.

Then I remembered my heart breaking for the second time in one day.

And then I remembered them.

The wolves.
