Chapter 1

Book 2: I Didn’t Believe in Us

When Juliet first saw Travis, she was instantly attracted to him. He was everything she had ever wanted in a man, and his hot, tattooed body was a bonus. He had only one flaw—he was a player among the ladies. Every time she saw him, he had a different woman in his arms. She knew she couldn’t trust him with her heart…but could she find the strength to resist him?

JULIET

I still remember the day I first laid eyes on him. It was a sunny day at the beach. I was nineteen that year.

Kristen had invited me to the beach, and I decided to go in my car so that I could leave whenever I wanted to. I didn’t want to depend on anyone to drop me home.

When I reached there, I saw Kristen, Will, and Finn. I also saw Will’s little sister, along with her dog, sitting a little farther from them.

Kristen ran toward me to greet me. “Juliet, I’m so glad you could make it.” She wrapped her arms around me.

“I’m happy you invited me.” I returned her hug and waved at the others.

Looking at Finn, I couldn’t help but think how handsome he was. I could understand why Lauren, Kristen’s cousin, was infatuated with him. Any girl who ended up with him would be lucky.

Suddenly, my heart skipped a beat as my eyes landed on someone I had never seen before.

Who the fuck is that? I wondered.

I couldn’t help but stare at him. He was shirtless, for God’s sake! His body was tattooed, but that wasn’t what had attracted me the most.

It was his eyes, his bright blue eyes. I could lose myself in them.

He smirked as he noticed me staring at him.

Shit!

“Umm, Juliet, you have a little drool dripping down your mouth.” Kristen pointed to the corner of her mouth.

I quickly wiped it off with the back of my hand.

Shit! Shit! Shit!

“Juliet! Hey, girl.” Lauren joined us.

I was grateful for the interruption. “Hey girl, how have you been?”

“Oh. My. God. Did you see Finn? He’s so handsome. I want him so bad!” Lauren glanced at Finn, who was busy talking to a random girl.

Kristen shook her head and went to see Jamie.

I sighed. “Didn’t he make it pretty clear that he wasn’t interested?”

Ever since Finn had become single, Lauren wanted to be in his arms. Now that he was sleeping with random chicks, she dreamed that he would change his mind about her.

However, he always said no to Lauren because he didn’t want to jeopardize the circle of our friends.

She shrugged. “He did, but I don’t care.” She readjusted her hair.

“Finn!” Lauren shouted as she made her way to him.

That girl will never learn.

I jumped a little as I felt fur tickling my thighs. I looked down and saw Jamie’s dog looking up at me.

I knelt next to him to pet him on his head. “Hello, handsome. What’s your name?”

“Shadow,” Kristen informed me. “Jamie went for a walk. She asked me to watch over him in the meantime.”

She told me about how Jamie had saved this dog’s life about a year ago. Shadow had been a random dog, yet she hadn’t hesitated to help him. She was an impressive young woman.

“Where’s Jamie?” Finn wondered as he interrupted my thoughts.

Poor Lauren, she was finally talking to him, and all he cares about is Jamie, I thought as I let go of Shadow and stood on my feet.

“She went for a walk,” Kristen said.

Finn looked at Will. “I’m going to see where she is, if that’s okay with you?”

Will nodded. “Sure. Tell her to hurry up, I didn’t sign up to take care of her dog. I told her so before we left.”

And just like that, Finn was gone to search for Jamie. Lauren wasn’t happy about that.

Finn had always been protective of Jamie. After all, he had known her since they were children. He was also best friends with Will. Finn probably saw it as his responsibility to make sure nothing happened to her.

I felt as if someone was staring at me. I looked around and my knees shook as I noticed the guy from earlier walking toward me.

“Hello, Red. What’s your name?”

I wanted to answer him, but I was tongue-tied. His piercing blue eyes made me forget my name.

He chuckled. “Do I have to ask you again, Red?”

“Uhm… what?” I couldn’t even string the words together.

What was that? I internally snapped at myself.

He smirked, making him look even hotter. “What’s your name, Red?”

Feeling stupid, I cleared my throat. “Juliet Swimmer.”

He took my hand, kissing my knuckles. “Travis. Travis Johnson.”

As soon as he touched my hand, I felt a spark traveling through my body. I had never felt anything like this before.

“Sweetie, I’m back with our drinks.” I heard a feminine voice behind him.

And just like that, he let go of my hand and turned around to take his drink. “Thank you, babe.” He then turned his head back to look at me. “It was nice meeting you, J.”

I hated when people gave me a nickname. I had a name, and it was Juliet. However, for some reason, I didn’t mind when it was him.

The girl giggled as Travis grabbed her butt, kissing her on the lips.

Why did I feel so envious all of a sudden? I had just met the guy. Get a grip already, I growled at myself.

So, wait, he was here with another girl, and he was hitting on me?

I guessed that made the two of them. I was thinking about Finn as well. The only one who wasn’t like them was Will.

Kristen and Will had been together for a long time and were even successful in a long-distance relationship. Nothing could break those two as they were so in love with one another. I envied them sometimes.

I hoped that one day, I could find a love like theirs.

Travis was handsome and my kind of guy, but I didn’t go for guys like him. I wanted someone who wanted only me, certainly not a womanizer like him.

I repeated this over and over in my head because when I looked at him, all I wanted was to go for it and forget that he was a playboy.

I only hoped that I wouldn’t regret my decision.
