Emmeline's Alpha

Chapter 2

When Emmeline woke again, she was alone in the bed. She sat up, the soft silk sheets falling to her waist as she looked around the room.

It was an enormous bedroom in comparison to what she had back at home. A large TV hung on the wall with a sizable black sofa in front of it.

She glanced at the clock on the nightstand. It was eight in the morning. She got up and explored the room.

A door led to a bathroom that was as large as the room and connected to an oversized walk-in closet. There she found her mother’s sundress neatly folded and, beside it, some clothes with a note on top. She walked over and picked up the note.

The clothes are for you.

—Gideon

She set the note down and took the clothes with her into the bathroom, where she showered. She used his shampoo and body wash, the cedar scent sticking to her skin even as she dried off.

After slipping on her undergarments, she pulled on a green T-shirt and a pair of black yoga pants. The clothes fit perfectly.

Emmeline wasn’t sure if she should go downstairs or wait for Gideon to come and get her. After a few moments, she opened the door and walked down the hall.

Emmeline could hear noises coming from downstairs. She followed them until she emerged in a dining room where the pack was having breakfast.

Gideon’s pack wasn’t a large pack. Judging by what she saw, there looked to be about eighty members, including women and children. Everyone fell silent when they saw her.

She played with the hem of her shirt as she looked out from under her eyelashes. Drake came up beside her.

“You can sit next to Alpha.” He pointed down the long table at the empty seat next to Gideon.

Emmeline slowly walked over to her mate.

Gideon had stood up when he saw his gamma standing too close to his mate for his liking. He waited for her to sit down before he returned to his seat.

A servant came and served Emmeline breakfast. She picked up her fork and speared at a piece of cantaloupe on her plate before slipping it into her mouth.

The juices burst in her mouth, and her eyes grew wide as she made a sound deep in her chest. The cantaloupe was sweet, and it had been a long time since she had any fruit this fresh.

“How did you sleep?” she asked, trying to make conversation with her mate.

“I slept fine,” Gideon murmured in a low, husky tone that sparked a fire inside Emmeline. When he didn’t make an effort to continue, Emmeline fell silent and began poking at her food.

“Eat,” he ordered.

Her eyes found his cold, hard eyes. She sighed and went back to eating her food.

After Gideon finished eating, he stood up and went to speak with a few pack members to the side of the room.

Emmeline observed her mate. He was a very tall, burly man. His shoulder muscles strained against his black T-shirt, and his black denim jeans hugged his derrière nicely.

She bit her lip as her eyes roamed the outline of his back, noticing the tattoos peeking out from his sleeves. A stirring began between her legs, and she squirmed in her seat.

Gideon sniffed the air. His body tensed. He turned around, and his eyes met hers. They were black again. She averted her gaze. Everyone was watching, and she felt heat rise up to her face.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Gideon turn abruptly and walk away.

Another woman scooted up to Emmeline. “Well, judging from our alpha’s reaction, you must be our luna.” Her brown eyes lit up. She looked to be around twenty-five, which was Emmeline’s age.

“Yeah,” Emmeline mumbled. “Why is he so cold?”

“He’s had a tough life. Give him time to get used to you,” she replied. “My name is Maxine.” Maxine held out her hand to Emmeline.

“Emmeline,” she said, giving Maxine hers.

“So, what were you before you came here?” Maxine asked curiously.

“Just a wolf. My father was a delta, but he died during an attack. I lived with my stepmother and stepsisters after,” Emmeline explained as she picked up her juice and drank it halfway.

Another woman appeared in Emmeline’s peripheral vision. She and Maxine turned to watch the woman as she crossed the room, wearing a short skirt and a tight top.

Maxine jabbed her thumb toward the woman. “That’s Gina. She likes to sleep around,” Maxine snarled.

Emmeline tilted her head as she observed the woman. She was pretty, her brown hair tied up into a ponytail.

Maxine placed a hand on Emmeline’s arm, getting Emmeline’s attention. “Don’t worry. You’re way more beautiful than she is.” She smiled.

Emmeline had been born with dark, midnight-colored hair that flowed down her back to her derrière. Her skin was pale in contrast to her hair. Her face was small and heart-shaped.

Gina walked over to a group of men, and they laughed at something she said. Emmeline wondered if she had ever made Gideon laugh. Instantly, jealousy roared through her.

“It’s very nice to meet you, Maxine. I think I’ll excuse myself and search for your alpha,” Emmeline said as she stood up.
