Prologue

I swirled the cocktail straw through my drink, listening to the ice cubes clink against the side of the glass as Lauren droned on. “…and I’m just not sure what to do about it, you know?”

My eyes snapped to her face, realizing she’d asked me a question. “Yeah, that seems like a hard situation,” I said, nodding. In truth, I hadn’t been paying attention and had no idea what she was talking about.

The office had been stressful this week. When my coworker asked me to grab drinks, I hadn’t been thinking. Desperate to escape the mounting pile of case files I had and avoid another Friday night of takeout and Netflix, I’d agreed. Now I was regretting that decision.

“I mean, there is nothing that forbids an interoffice relationship, right?”

The memory of talk in the break room of an attorney and a paralegal being seen making out in the supply closet resurfaced. No wonder Lauren had asked me out for drinks; everyone else in the office was probably avoiding her.

I took a swig of my drink. “I don’t recall anything specific in the rules, but it is strongly discouraged. If the partners found out, it could be detrimental to your career.”

Her delicate face crumbled. “I think I’m in love with him,” she mumbled as she tucked her mouse-brown hair behind her ear.

I felt sympathy wash over me. Resting my hand on hers, I gave her a small smile. “I’m going to grab us another round of drinks, and we can discuss it a little more.”

She nodded as I turned and strode to the bar.

The room was packed. All manner of professionals had come to have a drink and celebrate the end of the work week. I leaned against the bar, trying to get the bartender’s attention, when I felt someone press against me.

“Hello beautiful, mind if I buy you a drink?” I looked at the man beside me. He had shaggy brown hair and a slightly crooked smile. His suit looked bought off the rack and didn’t quite fit his medium build.

I sighed before turning my eyes back to the bartender. “I’m not interested, buddy,” I said loudly, hoping he’d get the message. Instead, he pressed closer to me, dropping his head so his mouth was near my ear.

“I just wanna buy you a drink, pretty lady.” He reached up and ran a finger through my loose blonde hair.

I pulled away, looking at him with disgust. “Do not touch me!” I said loudly and firmly, trying my best to step away from him. “I said no, so drop it.” I turned to find another spot along the bar to wait when the creep grabbed my arm.

“Hey, don’t be like that. I’m a nice guy, and I just wanna buy you a drink. You don’t have to be a bitch.”

I opened my mouth to let loose the flurry of curse words building inside me when I heard a voice next to me.

“I suggest you let her go,” the newcomer said, his deep voice rumbling across us.

My arm dropped as the creep let me go, his hands flying up in surrender as he backed away.

I turned to the new arrival.

“You okay?” he asked, his eyebrows knitted in concern.

I nodded once as I cleared my throat. “Thanks for your help, but I had it under control.”

He smiled. His teeth were dazzlingly white. “Oh, I don’t doubt it. Some of these guys can be real creeps. Just wanted to make sure you were okay.” As he took a swig of his drink, his Adam’s apple bobbed. I found my eyes glued to him.

This man was gorgeous. His dirty-blond hair was slightly unkempt and trailed over his forehead, hiding what looked to be cloudy blue eyes.

He was very tall, which made me feel small in comparison. His arm muscles were impressive and on display in his black short-sleeved shirt.

Despite myself, I drew closer to him. “Thank you. Can I buy you a drink as a token of my gratitude?”

His smile widened as he nodded. “Scotch, please.”

I turned toward the bar, hand raised to flag down the bartender. He finally made his way over, and I ordered a drink for me and my handsome savior. I grabbed them both and turned, gesturing for him to follow me through the crowd.

It wasn’t until I saw Lauren waiting that I remembered I didn’t grab a drink for her. “I’m sorry, Lauren. I had an incident at the bar and forgot your drink. I’ll go get it.”

Her eyes widened at the man standing next to me. She looked between the two of us before smiling slightly.

“Actually, I think I’m going to go home and text Ryan. I should talk with him. Thanks for listening, Liv.” She gathered her purse and, with a small wave, headed toward the door.

I felt my shoulders relax slightly. Lauren was a sweet girl, but I wasn’t used to making small talk with others.

“Thanks for the drink, Liv,” the man I’d brought over said as he reached for his glass. The way my nickname rolled off his tongue sent shivers through me. “I’m assuming that’s short for Olivia?”

I nodded and glanced up at him. Even through the darkness, I could now see that his eyes were a stormy gray, not the blue I originally thought. “And can I know the name of my rescuer?” I asked dramatically, batting my eyelashes.

He chuckled and leaned over the table. “I’m Wes.”

***

Wes looked at me with hooded eyes, his dark-blond hair falling over his forehead, shadowing his face. He smirked as he closed the small distance between us. His hands wrapped around my thighs as he picked me up and pushed me back against my living room wall.

He breathed against my lips before diving into my mouth, his tongue twisting and turning eagerly as I hungrily matched him. His erection pushed against my damp panties, and I groaned. I could feel his smile against my lips.

I let out a yelp as he pulled me away from the wall and swiveled around before placing me on the coffee table. He pushed my shoulders back, laying me flat.

Looming over me, he licked his thoroughly kissed lips before dropping kisses along my inner thigh.

My back arched off the table as his tongue trailed along my underwear. He tucked his fingers into the strings, pulling them down my legs as his lips inched closer to my core.

My body was vibrating. My skin felt hot and tight, and I desperately needed friction between my legs. Involuntarily, I let out a small whimper.

His head popped up from between my legs, his smile devious. “Needy, are we?”

I bit my lip as I nodded vigorously.

He let out a small chuckle before his head dipped back to my center, and his warm breath made me writhe on the table. Without another word, his tongue dipped into my wet slit. My eyes rolled back as my hips pushed into his face.

Without missing a beat, his tongue swirled around my bud and lapped at my juices. The sounds spilling from my mouth grew louder and louder. Typically, I tried to stay in control of myself during sex, but Wes made it impossible.

After a few minutes, he had my legs shaking as my vagina quivered, on the verge of exploding. As his tongue continued its magic, he slipped two fingers in, curving them just right, and I was gone.

With a scream, I came hard, all over his face. My body was tingly, and my chest rose and fell with my harsh breathing. I ran my hand through my hair and let out a little laugh. “God, I needed that,” I whispered to myself.

Suddenly, a hand wrapped around my ankle and pulled me roughly. I let out a yelp as my butt landed against rock-hard thighs.

“Surely you didn’t think I was done with you,” he said, a smile curving his lips upward. With my eyes wide, I gulped as I shook my head.

He wrapped his arms around me, lifting me slightly, and I noticed he was naked from the waist down. Before I could utter a sound, he turned us around so he was sitting on the coffee table, pulled me down, and impaled me on his length. My breath left my body in a whoosh.

I sat there for a moment, letting my body adjust to him as he ran kisses down my neck. His hands grazed up my sides, pulling my dress over my head. He leaned back, his gray eyes taking in my breasts before he dropped a kiss on each nipple.

Desperate to relieve more of the pressure I was feeling, I used my knees to raise myself before slowly sliding down his shaft. We both let out a soft groan.

“Oh God,” I cried out as I slid up and down him, feeling every inch fill me up. His hands rested gently on my hips, feeling my movements as I rode him steadily. “This…this isn’t like me,” I muttered. He flicked his hips up as I slid down, and I hissed with pleasure. “I don’t…don’t…”

“Fuck strangers?” His left eyebrow rose up in question.

Biting my tongue, I nodded before closing my eyes and abandoning myself to the pleasure building in my core. My legs moved faster as I chased my orgasm, thrusting myself up and down his slick length.

His torso met mine suddenly and our lips clashed roughly, our hips thrusting and swiveling as we chased our need. I tore my mouth from his, silently screaming as I shattered around him.

As euphoria seeped out of me, tiredness took its place, and I smiled lazily, leaning my head against his sweaty chest. “That was amazing,” I whispered, my hands tracing the hard line of his abs.

His chuckle echoed in my ear, and before I knew it, I was once again flat on my back.

“I’m nowhere near done with you, babe,” he growled.

I felt my inside clench as he slid back into me. Why did it feel so good? Had it always been like this? I mean, it had been months since I’d had sex. Maybe I’d just forgotten how good it was. But right now, he was like a sex god sent to satiate my thirst.

His speed increased as I wrapped my legs around him. He held me tight as the sound of our skin slapping together filled the air around us. A loud moan escaped me as I felt myself, yet again, drawing nearer to my finish. As if sensing my need, his hips drove into me faster and harder. It was like someone flipped a switch, and we cried out in unison.

The space between our bodies was wet and sticky, our skin slick with sweat. He rolled off me and lay on the floor. The silence suddenly felt awkward after how intimate we’d just been, and I remembered that he was virtually a stranger.

I sat up quickly, fighting with myself for a moment about if I should cover up but decided against it. I was a smart, strong, sexy, sensual woman, and if I wanted to have casual sex, I could!

“Well, that was certainly fun. Do you need me to see you out?” I asked as I stood, placing my hands on my hips, desperate to hide the shaking in my legs.

His eyes shone with amusement as he sat up. “Kicking me out so soon?”

I shrugged. “You could be a serial killer for all I know. But it seems like our business is done.” I turned and headed toward the bathroom, putting a little extra sway in my hips.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure I wanted him to go. It had been too long since I’d slept next to a man. A part of me felt bad for being so callous, but I’m sure he didn’t want to stay. After all, he’d gotten what he wanted.

Warm arms wrapped around me, pulling me against his body. My breath caught in my throat as one hand reached up to gently caress my breasts. “Like I said, I don’t think I’m quite done with you yet, babe.”

I let a small smile cross my lips. It looked like I’d have company for the night.

“Well then, Wes, how about a shower?”
