Jamie

In my early teens, I fell in love for the first time in my life. His name was Finn Campbell. I was 12 and Finn was 16 at the time. He was my older brother's best friend. I know, cliché, right?

My heart shattered into a thousand pieces when I first saw him kiss a girl. I still remember that day like it was yesterday.

One day after school, I went to my room to do my homework. When I was done I decided to grab a little snack before dinner was ready. It was then that I saw them.

Finn was sitting on the couch with a girl by his side kissing him. I ran upstairs as fast as I came and forgot I was hungry.

While I sat on the end of my bed to cry my heart out, my brother must have seen me because it didn't take him long to get into my room.

“Jamie, I know it will be hard for you to hear this, but you should forget about him. He'll never see you that way.”

“I know this already Will, but I can't help the way I feel about him.”

When Will was sitting next to me, I hugged my brother and started to cry more. Even though we are 4 years apart he has always been there for me and I am grateful to have a wonderful brother like him.

“Hey, Will, you in here?” Finn suddenly knocked on my door.

He hadn't waited for my brother to answer him and had decided to come in. I stiffen in my brother's arms. It was the first time that Finn had been in my room.

What will he think of me now?

I have soft toys on my bed and pink walls. He will only see me as a child now. I thought in the back of my head.

No! no! no! I'll tell mom I need to make some changes here.

“What the fuck man? You don't barge in my sister's room like that!”

“Sorry man, I didn't do it on purpose. I wanted you to know Kristen is here. Jem, are you okay?” He asked me when he saw me cry in my brother's arms. Since I knew him he always called me Jem instead of Jamie and I still don't know why.

As I quickly wiped away my tears, Will got up from my bed to get out of my room. I mustered all my courage to stand in front of Finn.

“Don't worry about me, nothing I can't handle,” I answered his question.

He put his two hands on each of my shoulders. “That's s my Jem. Nothing can stop her.” He then leaned over to let a kiss on my head.

Did he say his Jem? Oh my god, oh my god. My heart stopped beating by his gesture. I can't even move. I am too amazed right now.

“Finn, leave her alone already. Come on man our girls are waiting for us.”

But what just happened? Was this real or was it all a dream?

I went to my bedroom window to look at Finn who was holding the hand of the girl I saw him with earlier as he helped her get in his truck.

At that moment, I dreamed that I was in her shoes and that it was my hand he was holding to help me get into his truck.

“Jamie, I know it will be hard for you to hear this, but you should forget about him. He'll never see you that way.”

My brother's voice invaded my mind as I kept watching them.

Then all my thoughts stopped as I saw the girl in question looking at me. I quickly closed the curtains and stepped away from my window. Whilst praying she won't tell me.

I went out of my room and started to run down the stairs. I was looking for my parents.

“Mom, Dad, where are you guys?”

“In the living room honey.” I heard my father answer me.

“Umm, guys I made a decision. It's time for me to grow up. I want to rearrange my room. It's time to take me more seriously. I'm even ready to work around the house to pay for everything. Please, please, please I need it so badly.”

“Hold on, honey, not so fast. Why suddenly the change of mind?” My father was the one to ask me.

“I'm growing up and I want an older room for me.”

“Tell you what, your father and I will talk about it and let you know our answer. Now go set the table we're going to eat soon.”

I was about to say more when my dad stopped me. “It's not a no, but your mother and I will make this decision together. Now go and do what your mother asked you to.”

Am I crazy to love someone that I know will never share the same feeling for me? Wouldn't life be easier if we could find someone to share this with?

Stop thinking about this Jamie it will give you a headache.

“Hey Miss Harrison, do you mind if I eat here tonight.” Suddenly I heard Finn talking to my mom.

Wait, is this a dream?

“Of course you are always welcome here. But weren't you guys out and where is Will? Is he with you?” My mother asked in her turn.

Nope, not a dream. I said to myself when I heard my mother answer him.

Okay, breathe nice and easy. You can handle this.

“Something came up for me and Nathalie. Will is still on his date with Kristen.” He answered my mother's question as he sat next to me.

Wait, is he sitting next to me? Okay, okay, don't panic, now is not the time to make a fool of yourself. Try to be as normal as possible.

Yeah, easier said than done!

At the end of dinner, I helped my mom wash the dishes before settling into the leaving room to watch a movie.

“So tell me, what are we watching tonight?” Finn asked me as he sat next to me.

“Umm, I was catching up on the last season of Supergirl.” I managed to tell him.

“So no romantic movie for you?”

“Nope, not tonight.”

Is he really going to sit beside me until my brother gets back? Do wishes really come true?

Then I heard his cell phone ring. “Hey, baby.” He answered.

“No, nothing important why?”

“Your parents are gone for the night. Yeah, I'll be there. See you in a bit baby.”

I may be 12 years old but I know what he meant by that. My heart broke once again.

“Shit, sorry Jem I didn't mean for you to hear this. Raincheck for the movie?”

“Uhm, okay, see ya later then.” I'm proud of myself to be able to make a whole sentence despite the situation.

I'm surprised when he leaves a kiss on my cheek before he leaves.

Now I have mixed feelings and I don't know how to handle them.

First of all, he's going to spend his night with her and I know exactly what they are thinking and secondly, he just left a kiss on my cheek as my heart skips a beat.

I know I need to forget about him but my heart doesn't seem to get the memo.

Jamie

When I was 13, my brother and Finn were getting ready to leave for college. Will decided to have a little get-together with his friends for the last time before he left.

He was kind enough to let me stay. In return, I promised him not to embarrass him in front of his friends.

I was happy because that meant I could spend a little more time with Finn. Unless that Nathalie girl will be here tonight.

I hate that girl

I should probably go find something to wear for tonight! Maybe I could ask Kristen to help me with this? She always seems to have good taste with the clothes.

When I found myself in front of my brother's bedroom door, I wasted no precious time and knocked hard to make sure he heard me.

“Jamie, what did I tell you about the way you knock on my door! I was in the middle of something.” He snapped at me.

As I pick a little inside his room I can see he was playing a video game. Sometimes I wonder who is older between us?

“Geez sorry! Is Kristen with you? I wanted to ask her something.”

“She's downstairs, helping mom,” Will said in a calmer tone.

“Ok, thanks. Sorry for the door.”

“No, it's okay. I should have snapped at you like that. Need anything else?”

“Nope,” I said. He nodded while he closed the door to return to his game I guess.

“Kristen, can you help me choose something to wear for tonight?” I asked her when I found her.

“Of course I will help you. If you want I can also do your hair and makeup?”

“Okay! Come we don't have time to waste then,” I took Kristen's hand and started leading her to my room.

I'm so excited right now. I'm going to look so pretty and Finn will be there to see it.

“Thank you for doing this. I'm going to look so pretty.

“It's my pleasure. But you know you don't need makeup to look beautiful. You look beautiful no matter what. So let's peek a look in your wardrobe.”

She picked a cream blouse with a blue square neck denim pinafore, 2 pack knee sock and with black shoes. Let's just say that the hair, makeup and the outfit were perfect for tonight.

After helping me, Kristen went back to my brother's room to get ready herself for tonight.

Mom and dad left after Will promised the hundred times that he would take care of me and nothing will happen while I am in his care.

“Can you get the door, Jamie?” My brother asked me when we heard the doorbell ring.

“That's why I could stay so I would be your own personal butler!”

Unbelievable.

“Sister yo know I love you but don't start.”

Typical! I knew it was too good to be true.

But when I opened the door and Finn was on the other side, I didn't mind at all being the butler this once.

“Jem, fancy seeing you here,” Finn said with a smile on his face.

“You're so funny!” I said to him, smiling as well.

“Hey, what are you still doing standing at the door?” Nathalie asked Finn after she joined us. “Oh, hey Janie.” She spoke to me when she saw me standing there with Finn.

“It's Jamie!” I nearly snapped at her.

She deliberately ignored what I had just told her, took Finn's hand and walked into my house.

I don't know what's so great about her so Finn would notice her. I mean did you see her? She seems fake.

Why can't I be at their ages? Maybe then Finn would finally notice me. Keep on dreaming that will never happen.

I was right. I am the butler as I'm always the one to open the door. Maybe it's a good thing? Like this, I don't have to see Finn kiss another girl.

Great, I sound like I'm jealous. Which I am, I love him. I have to forget him. Things will be easier when he's gone. I won't have to see him that much.

Nope, also a lie. Just the thought of him leaving, It's breaking my heart. I'll miss him.

Great now I have to go to the bathroom before I embarrass myself in front of everyone. I hate being 13.

I decided to go to the one upstairs because no one is allowed there. The rules don't apply to me because I live here.

When I opened the bathroom door, I saw something that I didn't expect to see. There, in front of me, Nathalie was kissing someone on the lips who wasn't Finn.

“I'm sorry, I didn't know.” I got out as quickly as possible.

Before I could think or do anything with this new information, Nathalie grabbed me by the elbow and pushed me against a wall. Not enough to hurt me but enough to scare me.

“Listen here, you little missy, if you say anything to Finn, I will tell him how you truly feel about him. What you thought I didn't notice the way you looked at him.”

My body started to shake with fear not because of her but because of the threat she just gave me. I didn't want Finn to find it out not like this.

“Careful, she's Will's little sister. I don't want any problem with him.” The guys who Nathalie was kissing in the bathroom came to my rescue. Well if you call this a rescue.

“What the fuck is going on here? Let go of my sister, now!” I felt relieved to hear my brother's voice.

“I'm out of here.” The guy from before said.

“No, you stay right where you are. Jamie?” My brother turns to me for answers.

“Don't tell me you will listen to her, she will lie,” Nathalie said to my brother.

“I'm being tolerant of you because you're Finn's girl. Don't push me and my sister will never lie to me.”

“Hey what's going on here? The party is downstairs.” Finn asked when he joined us.

“Jamie, I'm still waiting for your explanation.” My brother spoke to me once more.

With my brother's presence, I found my strength to speak. I look one last time at Finn and pray he will forgive me.

“I went to the bathroom and when I opened the door, I saw Nathalie kissing him and not in a friendly way. Then she grabbed me and pushed me at that wall and threatened me not to say anything.”

“Jamie go to your room now!” Will ordered me.

I looked at Finn and he was mad as hell. I didn't want to cause another scene and did exactly what my brother asked me to do.

Kristen opened the door of my room and stepped inside.

“I did a mess, didn't I?” I asked her.

“Don't worry about it. How are you feeling?” She asked me while she took a place beside me.

“A little better.”

“To tell you the truth I never liked Nathalie. I don't know what Finn saw in her. At least now he knows the truth about her before he left for college.”

I took her hand In mine thinking that if I had a sister I would have liked to be her. My brother had found a good one.

“Do you think he's mad at me?” I was asking about Finn.

Before she could answer me we heard a knock on my door. Nathalie let go of my hand and went to open the door. She stepped outside to let Finn get in.

I couldn't look at him so instead, I decided to look at my floor.

“Jamie look at me.” He said when he was seated beside me.

No Jem. He must be mad at me.

“I'm sorry,” I whispered as a single tear escaped my eyes.

He grabbed my chin so I would look at him. “You have nothing to apologize for. None of this is your fault.” He whipped my tears with his thumb and kissed my forehead.

“Now I better go before your brother comes here and kicks my ass to be in your room.”

“So you aren't mad at me.”

“I can never be mad at my Jem.” He then left my room after saying this.

How can I ever stop loving him when he's so nice to me?

Advice From a Jilted Bride

What’s a girl to do after being ditched at the altar by text message? That’s right. Text. Message.

How does she pick up the pieces and move on? I’m no Dear Abby but here’s a little free advice…

Advice #1 – First, purge your apartment of all things him—by tossing his belongings off the balcony.

Advice #2 – Do not, I repeat do not, throw anything out into the hallway because you’ll injure your hot new neighbor.

Advice #3 – When said neighbor brings over Chinese Food do not let him stay and keep you company. It’s awkward when you realize he’s your boss.

Advice #4 – Accept his offer to help you with your side business but think twice before using a date to his sister’s wedding as collateral.

Advice #5 – Investigate who your mystery neighbor really is. Don’t trust his word even if he’s the world’s best kisser.

If you listen to nothing else, pay attention to that last one. It’s the most important and will save you a lot of heartache.
